Bishopric counselor wants to meet with me...I'm scared

I've been flying under the radar for the most part since my faith collapse two years ago; I've been lucky to have a low-key calling that I'm ok doing as it doesn't require a huge amount of time and I don't have to teach/testify things I don't believe. But the counselor wants to meet with me tomorrow...

Re: The LDS Flat Earth

I would argue that literal belief in the BoM is even more baseless than flat earthers. In order to believe the earth is flat, you just have to discount all external evidence and accept what your own eyes tell you: the earth looks flat, at least from ground level. No one has that kind of first person...

Re: Being NOM is the worst

Thanks for the commiseration, all. i should clarify that the point I was trying to make from the subject line (but forgot to include in the actual post) is that being NOM is the worst part of the spectrum from resigned exmormon to orthodox believer. A true believer who happens to fit the mold gets g...

Being NOM is the worst

I joined this board about two years ago (before it moved to this new site) in the middle of my faith crisis/transition. I used to post here pretty frequently, but since I've rebuilt my worldview (now atheistic/secular) I mostly just poke my head in now and then. I'm still active, such as it is, with...

Re: Dilemma

I just went through this myself yesterday. I have no desire to go to any temple myself, but for social reasons I feel for the time being that having a recommend is better than not. As others have said, the questions are phrased as yes/no, and leaders are instructed NOT to ask follow up questions. Ul...

Re: An interesting training

Wow, this is really amazing. I would be shocked and encouraged if something like this happened in my area, where we just had stake and ward conference with nary a whisper of anything about members leaving. Except for a brief rant against the internet by the area authority. Thanks for keeping us upda...

Discovering my FIL is a NOM of some kind

I’ve been married for about two years to a wonderful woman who happens to be a TBM. But she’s not a TBM in the same way I used to be, until or temple marriage ceremony catalyzed my faith crisis and intellectual journey out of orthodoxy. I grew up in Happy Valley, UT, in a very orthodox, literal beli...

I posted a similar question on Reddit and then came here and realized you guys had already been discussing the very thing I was asking about. You've all shared some good insights, thanks!

Yep, I came here to post this, as we read section 16 last night. Very "intimately and impressively personal" revelation, gotta hand it to Joe.

Joseph Smith the fortune teller

DW and I are going through D&C right now (are you all excited for Sunday School next year??). Last night we read D&C 15, and the section heading got me really excited: Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to John Whitmer, at Fayette, New York, June 1829 (see the heading to section 14). ...

David and Uriah: Another take on the story

For pragmatic reasons, I have been taking an institute class this semester on the Old Testament. A few days ago we covered the story of David, Bathsheba, and Uriah. I've heard this narrative taught many times over the years, and this time was no different. The point of the story, the big thing we ar...

Re: A reintroduction

Corsair, thanks for the advice. I read a post of yours similar to it several months ago, and the idea of indifference really helped me. As a true believer, I had to care about the church because it was the most important thing in the whole universe; as a disaffected member that mindset simply flippe...

Re: Explain your avatar choice

Mine is an artistic depiction of neurons by an artist named Greg Dunn (see more of his work at gregadunn.com). I'm currently doing research on ion channels, which are basically the molecular switches in neurons that allow them to sense and propagate stimuli. The subject of my avatar is a reflection ...

A reintroduction

Some of you may remember me from the old board, though I haven't posted in a while. About a year and a half ago, I posted an introduction on the old NOM board. I’d recently had a typical shelf collapse after studying the details of polygamy, racism, revisionist history, Book of Mormon historicity, e...

Not sure about the origin of Kish, but Laban's name was more likely ripped off from Genesis.
