Re: Showing some skin
The WoW is so obviously a relic of the nineteenth century. Indeed, were it written today, it would decry sugar and transfats and emphasize the importance of exercise. Maybe we'd spend sacrament meeting on the treadmill... I don’t mean to be disparaging of weight gain. I'm a normal weight for my hei...

Re: Showing some skin
Perhaps this is an oversimplification, but from my perspective in my current social circle, there are few acceptable means of self-expression for women. Taking care of one’s body and one’s attractiveness are appropriate and I know many women who do this to what I consider an extreme. I say extreme ...

Re: Showing some skin
You and I are undoubtedly from different generations. I'm heading into my mid-sixties and have been very happily married for 41 years. Some here who remember me from the former board know that I'm fairly conservative but I have empathy for those who may not be believers. I don't blame them for the w...

Re: Showing some skin
And Palerider, those generalizations were generalizations. But most men have an attractiveness level below which they will not go. There just isn't any attraction. But once a woman meets his attractiveness threshold, then he looks for other traits, such as intelligence. Because that is a factor in ...

Re: Showing some skin
Hi Alas! Much of this I agree with. Some I have to take a little exception to. It isn't just that men compete with men through sports, job, money, power, flashy car, and looks and women compete with other women with looks. It is that women select men on all those various traits while (shallow) men s...

Re: Showing some skin
Having had numerous occasions to converse with females regarding just this subject (because of my profession, which shall remain unknown), I think I have some insight to your question. Men compete against other men in areas of sports, financial success and also for particular women. The way they dre...

Re: What are priesthood keys?
Matt. 16: 19 "And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." As it happened these keys were specific to those true Apostles who received them directly from Chri...

Re: What exactly are Good Works?
This brings to mind an issue that the Founding Fathers had when they established the U.S. Constitution. Whether the citizenry would pass laws that were truly for the benefit of mankind. Specifically, whether they would be able to tell the difference between "Liberty" and "License". Liberty, which we...

Re: What exactly are Good Works?
Seems to me that "good works" primarily have to come as a result of the Spirit moving in our lives. I even think this includes many (not all) atheists and agnostics who would assign their impulses to do good as altruism. For if we simply do "good works" to be seen of men are they then entirely good?...

Re: Mormon reformation and apostates
It's interesting to note that many of the polygamist groups, especially those of Colorado City, still have church ownership of the entire town and it's homes. So if an individual or family wants to leave the "community" the church still allows them to take nothing but the clothes on their backs when...

Re: Resignation
Why do I get the feeling that this (the church way) isn't the way the Savior would go about this? I think the Savior would be prepared to accept my decision (with sadness and regret of course) as the use of free agency that it is. No hoops to jump through. No artificial guilt trips or threats of los...

Resignation
Sorry if this topic doesn't belong here but was wondering if there had been any more news on whether a member can resign from the church online or not? Lately I've been thinking more seriously about getting this over. I just don't want to go through the crap of having to talk to a Bishop or Stake Pr...

Re: What calling does someone like me get?
When I informed my Stake Pres. about my new feelings toward the church and that I wanted a release, he wouldn't release me from my calling (High Priest GL) immediately. Eventually he got the message that I was very unhappy being forced (in a way) to represent a church that I no longer believed in. ...

Re: Angel Nephi, scratch that, Moroni - ?
Heard something the other day that really resonated with me and applies to so much of the churches sorry apologetics. The story of the honest waiter (0r Everybody makes mistakes occasionally): When things get busy in a crowded restaurant there are occasions when a good waiter might give a customer t...

Re: In the news today...no surprise it's tied to Mormonism
The current church would love to scrape the tar of polygamy off their backs but it still remains. From Hinckley interview with Larry King: "As far as I'm concerned, I have nothing to do with it. It belongs to the civil officers of the state. Larry King: You condemn it. Gordon B. Hinckley: I condemn ...

Re: Joseph's plea to Vermont
I believe it is an apologists' claim that Joseph wouldn't have had any opportunity to read or experience Shakespeare's work before "translating" the BoM and so when the BoM states "from whence no traveler can return" we are to believe that it is purely coincidental that it is nearly a perfect paraph...
