Re: Baby steps!
Think about this for a minute. In 200 years the universe will have killed you, forgotten about you, and more than likely continued on without you. If you're fortunate, you may have some progeny alive that carries your genetic matter and inherent weakness, your likeness, and your religious beliefs. ...

Re: Baby steps!
There is a really long thread relating to NDE's here: https://newordermormon.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2387&hilit=NDE How can you trust the outcome of prayers? Why do you need to trust it? Are you getting answers that make you feel uncomfortable and thus need to have some sort of "trust?" The apostate...

Re: Book: The righteous mind
Ok, time for another update. the next chapter I read have been about groupishness, and how it can be explained partly by a form of self-interest. Haidt writes that the selfish gene (which I think is also a book by Dawkins) creates strategically altruistic people who are shaped by kin selection, goss...

Re: Baby steps!
Seeking a spiritual witness as a believer sent me down a weird path where I would pray about which can of soup to buy at the store, then I would switch back and forth between can choices unsure of which one was actually the right can of soup. Jeez. Yeah, that's unhealthy. If you are that de...

Re: do I want to catch the monkey?
Love to hear this. Thanks for popping in! Recently my DW had started to really hit the angry phase (after many years of my quiet FC before her). Last night she was ranting, big time. She said she wishes something would just piss her off so we can leave. That sounds exciting. Lets have an update from...

Re: Baby steps!
I remember on my mission, when I didnt want to do something my companion would say "but Elder, I really think I was prompted that we need to do ____." All I could do was sigh and go along with it because what was I going to do, call him out and tell him what he felt was not actually the spirit? It w...

Re: Bill Reel Gets Ultimatum from Stake President
I agree. This is where most of these types of discussions end up. The Apostate will rage "why cant they just use logic, evidence, and objectivity! They are willfully ignoring it!" The TBM will rage "why cant they see that logic, evidence, and objectivity has no place in this type of truth seeking! T...

Re: Bill Reel Gets Ultimatum from Stake President
Is it an unrecognized or even benign type of arrogance? Is it strictly fear? Is it that condition of having made up one's mind and not wanting to go back and re-evaluate? Is it wanting to be "right" so badly that admittance of error is untenable? Would it disgrace the traditions of our fathers? If ...

Re: Out Groups
Sorry man. Everytime I read your posts, I feel for you. I think you have two options here that do not include more drama. Find a new outgroup. That might involve drama, depending on what the group looks like. Easier said than done however. I got involved in the county fair here. They are good peeps....

Re: Patrick Mason and the collapse of apologetics
It does nothing anywhere even close to this however. That ought to be bothering people a whole lot more than it seems to be in my opinion. They would INSIST on debating anyone in the world anywhere on any subject, and be able to get the info from the CREATOR of anyone debating the prophet. This wou...

Re: Bill Reel Gets Ultimatum from Stake President
One cannot set oneself up as an arbiter of truth and then avoid it because of the cost involved. To do so would not be denial....only cowardice. This is where I break with most people on this forum, because we really cannot determine why someone is avoiding the truth. This point gets debated here, ...

I can't even consider turning my brain off and going back to TSCC. Every now and then my DH says something that makes me realize he's waiting for me to go back to believing. It's a bit startling that he doesn't realize there is no going back. I listened to the Mormon Discussions Jana Reiss podcast ...

Re: Mr. and Mrs. Græy's Stuff
That sucks, im sorry. I don't have any sage words except keep on keeping on. Hopefully she will see at some point the forest behind the trees. I honestly feel like this sort of thing is what the leadership of the church don't want, but it's the only way they know how to run a program, so they contin...

I have a thread going on that book, although it is taking me a while to get through it. I can migrate my posts to this thread or we can discuss it over on the other one, but I did hope that I could get a discussion going on it. I am loving the book.

Re: Patrick Mason and the collapse of apologetics
What apologetics say, or don't say, admit or don't admit, ultimately doesn't matter. We are at a point in this church where even what general authorities say or don't say, and even what an apostle says or doesn't say, doesn't matter. If it isn't taught consistently, by all 15 of the 12 apostles, for...

Re: Bill Reel Gets Ultimatum from Stake President
I said, "There's no such thing as denial. Only cowardice." Nope. I'm going to push back hard right here. Would you say that to a Mother who has been informed that a son/daughter has been killed overseas and has not yet been able to grieve because she is in denial? Then why would you say that to any...

Re: The Cosmological Conundrum
the Bible is true and perfect because the god says it is in the Bible. Hmmm..... Not sure the Bible says that. Do you have an example? Well, before I start tossing out scriptures and we get into a discussion I should clarify a few things. I said biblical belief is circular, what I meant was that he...
