Re: Mysteries in the Book of Mormon?

I always figured Nephi or Nephite was always a play on Nephilim from Genesis 6:4. He might have gotten it from John Walker's pronunciation guide (as well as possibly many others): http://blog.mrm.org/2014/07/john-walkers-key-opens-book-of-mormon-names/ That would explain the curious Latin pronuncia...

Re: Critique of worthiness interviews

Great article! Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about worthiness interviews and their origin. Mithryn made a great blog post about this with a timeline (and links to sources if you're so inclined): https://exploringmormonism.com/bishops-interview-timeline/ I find it most interesting that 1) they s...

Re: Mysteries in the Book of Mormon?

Having read the blog article, I think Volluz is making this into more than what it really is. I think, as Joseph is want to do, he has just taken the word "gaze" and played with it to make it seem exotic. Scrying or stone gazing being his forte, it seems like a small leap. The coincidental link with...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

Even though Jeffery is more compassionate than some, he still gets it wrong in some important ways. Being "changed" into a new person doesn't begin AFTER "repentance is complete". It begins the moment we begin to place our faith in Christ and ask for forgiveness. We begin to enter the healing proces...

Re: Mysteries in the Book of Mormon?

Welcome! Your story sounds very familiar. ;) I'm trying to remember a BofM phrase that comes almost verbatim from A View to the Hebrews . Anyway, when I mentioned this phrasing to an apologist on another website, he informed me that the phrase was even closer to Joseph than even I had thought and co...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

While doing a little research on this thread, I came across this article on lds.org. from the New Era. To me it shows just how deep set the hooks are for young people and adults regarding purported priesthood authority. Here's an excerpt: "Some mistakes, especially those regarding immorality, requir...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

I don't think your experience disproves or diminishes the experiences of others, as recounted in many of the stories Sam has collected. I agree. My intent in posting the anecdote was to show that un-informed, ignorant or rogue leaders do exist out there and will do stupid sh!t. Obviously the church...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

Some of the examples I've found the most compelling as I've presented this previously were the ones that alas pointed out, the way that girls are taught about virtue. They are taught that virtue almost solely equates with sexual virginity. The object lessons of the nail in the board, the chewed gum...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

There is scriptural support for the original Apostles having authority to designate a repentant individual. John 20: 22-23 "22And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: 23Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever s...

Re: Critique of worthiness interviews

Well written and thought out article. I've been saying for a long time now that the worthiness interview is a sham. It's impossible for one individual to truly ascertain or "measure" another individuals worthiness. That is something only God can do. When I was in the Bishopric there were numerous ti...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

Let it be said in emphasis that even the First Presidency and the Apostles do not make a practice of absolving sins. They waive penalties in the course of their ministrations. Thus the forgiveness or waiver of penalty is not something to be taken idly or thoughtlessly and is not to be given for a m...

Re: Scriptures I hate and why

Harold B. Lee spoke to my missionary group when we went through the temple for the first time. He was severely serious. He asked if we had any questions. As each question was started he would begin turning to the answer from the scriptures which were in the form of a giant quad on the lecturn in fr...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

Don't know if this idea will have any effect on the conversation here but it was my understanding that institutional "forgiveness" from the church was quite different from forgiveness proffered from the Lord. The Lord can forgive us immediately but the authorities of the church have to wade through...

1922 – During Conference, Heber J. Grant stated, “I am not going to give any command, but I will ask it as a personal, individual favor to me, to let coca-cola alone. There are plenty of other things you can get at the soda fountains without drinking that which is injurious. The Lord does not want ...

Re: Scriptures I hate and why

Anyone, if they are introspective and/or hard on themselves, could fall into the "Trap of Insufficient Faith." And they would be extra susceptible to Gaslighting. Imagine if speakers started getting up in meetings and saying, "The Brethren's lack of faith is holding back the growth of the Church" o...

Re: Scriptures I hate and why

These "scriptures" and others that Joseph cooked up are just false doctrine. No doubt about that. That's why they create disharmony within the individual.

I really like contrasting 1 Nephi 3:7 with D&C 124:49.

Total revelation of convenience.
