Re: I was willfully ignorant - I shouldn't complain.

I just wanted to believe. And so I did. Willfully ignorant. If I see Mormonism as a pious fraud, I also need to acknowledge what a willing mark I was given the amount of stuff I willingly put on the shelf. Good insight. If it wasn't for my oldest son leaving the church and me diving in deep to trul...

Re: Used to be in

Welcome, No Tof. Having your kids leave the church can definitely send one down the rabbit hole. I have 3 out and one likely to follow.

I agree that with the impressive Mormon resume you would have a lot to contribute here if you have the time and inclination.

Re: New NOM Here

Hi Everyone. I was born and raised in the church, graduated from BYU, married in the temple etc. I am a recent convert to NOMism after exploring church history and really allowing myself to think critically about my beliefs. It has been liberating to finally admit to myself that I don't believe all...

Re: Another Testament of Marriage

I may be mistaken, but is that the private group that evolved out of the Faces East forum? That forum is still online, although not very active. The problem I have with that forum is that it all starts from the point of view that the believing spouse has to bring the disaffected spouse back to the c...

Re: Zadok's Mission Report

As soon as I knew the Emu was active on this board one of the first things I thought of was to ask if the motor home he trip written about on the old board had happened. Glad to see you have hit the road. Looks like a nice rig you have. Did you have the paint work done, or was that from the previous...

Re: Conference Talk Review: Saturday Afternoon - Todd Christofferson, "Abide in My Love"

I've noticed a trend where the church leaders like to quote each other. I rarely hear them quote JS or any of the dead leaders. They quote each other in circles almost like they have all been instructed to quote only living leaders. I also noticed that it was the senior members of the Q15 he quotes...

Re: Conference Talk Review: Sunday Morning, Russell Nelson "Joy and Spiritual Survival"

If we look to the world and follow its formulas for happiness, we will never know joy. The unrighteous may experience any number of emotions and sensations, but they will never experience joy! Joy is a gift for the faithful. It is the gift that comes from intentionally trying to live a righteous li...

Re: Tithing blessings and magical thinking

One reason why the fortunate buy into magical thinking regarding tithing is that flattery works. If you are rich, lucky you, but if you are rich and tithed you are blessed . Works great for keeping the well off contributing to church coffers. Magical thinking also seems a probable explanation for th...

Re: A sin resistant generation

One of the things that irks me is as a people we seem to be overly obsessed with sin and repentance. I realised one day that my life is pretty boring and I wondered what it was that I was supposed to be repenting of every day. I would much rather raise a generation of kind, reliable, confident kids...

Re: More NOM posters needed

I don't have the phrasing for Twitter, but how about using Tiny URL to make the url take fewer characters? I haven't used Tiny URL myself, but I know many who have used it - I guess i would work with Twitter? What I meant is that Twitter allows 140 characters in one message. This is about how much ...

My Reintroduction

Let me re-introduce myself since we have a new NOM like unto the old one, minus the archive where you can look up introductions. I am BIC, RM, MIT with 4K and a TBM DW. On my mom's side we go back to the earliest days of the church. My dad was more of a social convert. My three oldest kids are no lo...

Re: Tithing blessings and magical thinking

At my most TBM I did not have a testimony of tithing, and would have said so out loud if asked. I did not perceive blessings nearly so much as I did the deprivation. For myself I could have lived with it, but not when I had a family that needed more than I could provide after paying my religious tax...

Re: Apostate Quotes for Faithful Talks

“I admire men and women who have developed the questing spirit, who are unafraid of new ideas as stepping stones to progress. We should, of course, respect the opinions of others, but we should also be unafraid to dissent–if we are informed. Thoughts and expressions compete in the marketplace of th...

Re: As an active NOM, how do you engage the church?

I still attend to support my wife, and to a lesser extent, my daughter. I say to a lesser extent because I think chances are better than even that she will follow her siblings who no longer participate. That said, we sit close together in SM and it is a good bonding experience. I also think it is im...

Re: What is Faith?

I think faith and doubt should coexist, they work together not against each other. That is the way I see it. I see little point to faith if there is no doubt about a particular thing. But LDS Church leaders when they talk about faith are not really talking about "faith". They are talking about a be...
