Our young, black, relatively-progressive-for-a-Mormon bishop...
Wait... You had a black bishop!?!?!?!

I mean, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and in fact it's kind of cool! That just totally surprises me.

Re: "The Ignorance of Mocking Mormonism"

I really liked it. While Mormonism certainly has its pitfalls, the doctrines of Mormonism do compel people to action, and much of that action is directed at doing good.

Re: Guns at church?

Does anyone here think that the issues that we are all aware of in the LDS church potentially make it a 'target' for a mass shooting? Am I more likely to be the victim of a mass shooting in sacrament meeting, or at the mall? I have to agree with other folks. Odds are that you're a lot more likely t...

Re: Guns at church?

His son and his family came to our house recently, and at the end of a nice evening the son decided to reveal he had been carrying a gun the whole time. WOW  WTF? Who does that? That is so crazy/creepy! I don't mean to poke on either of you here, but when I read Enoch's story, I thought it s...

Re: Guns at church?

Just my opinion, your chances of being murdered at either location are statistically insignificant. If it were me I would worry more about dying of heart disease and start exercising more and eating better. But the nice thing is you have a choice of how prepared you wish to be. As humans we are all...

Re: Guns at church?

I live in Arizona. Our gun laws are VERY open here. I'm fairly certain there is no prohibition on carrying a concealed weapon in a church. In fact, in Arizona, you don't even need to have a concealed weapons license to carry a concealed handgun (I'm not a fan of that law by the way). We refer to it ...

Re: Guns at church?

If this was something I decided to do, I wouldn't tell anyone about it. No one in my ward would have a clue. It would be very concealed, and would only come out if a psycho came in and started killing people. I understand and respect that there are people here that don't like guns and are made uncom...

The Mormon Church prohibits firearms in their churches: https://www.lds.org/handbook/handbook-2-administering-the-church/selected-church-policies/21.2?lang=eng&_r=1#21.2.4 Should more parishioners carry guns in church? Guns at church?

In light of the most recent mass shooting at the church in Sutherland Springs Texas, for those of you that still go to church, would you consider packing heat as a result? This has happened in LDS churches before (to a much smaller degree). http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/08/30/california.mormon.bisho...

I know a SP counselor that refers to F&T meeting as "open mic Sunday". He really doesn't care for it that much either.

Re: Consultants for the church

At the end of my mission, I recall my mission president telling me, "In order to receive inspiration, you need information." I think it is very likely that the church hires consultants on many matters. I also think it falls very much in line with the way the church defines the gospel and personally ...

A positive experience

I haven't posted here in a long time. Things have been hard. Sometimes it's easier to just disconnect from Mormonism during the week... That being said, I have come back to lurk from time to time. I did want to share a positive experience I had at church on Sunday. My wife came to church with me on ...

He's spoken at a stake conference I attended before. I read his name in some articles as being on the short list for apostle when we got the three new ones a couple of years ago. Very shocking

Re: Church Racism- Alive and well?

I have often wondered what would have happened if events on October 7 1943 had been different... That is surely an interesting alternate history you've come up with. I find the parallels between the church's racism problems and homophobia rather interesting as well. The church was late to adopt a '...

Re: NO WHERE on lds.org does the Q15 say "I know the church is true". So when/why did members start saying it?

When learning to speak Spanish for my mission, this was a phrase that we were taught to say. "Yo se que la iglesia es verdadera." I know that the church is true. That was just a phrase that we were taught to say. It was just as simple and common as, "Donde esta el bano?" Also, this is a phrase that ...
