Re: Signs of church in Apostasy
That's interesting stuff, Arcturus. Also the fact that Brigham lived in a mansion while most members were scratching out minimal subsistence and living in hovels. Don't try to tell me he earned it through carpentry work. And then there was the way the prophet (Brigham Young) would borrow vast amoun...

Re: Signs of church in Apostasy
Brigham's individual wealth that he was able to amass as a result of deploying church resources for personal enrichment is a big deal to me. There's a lot of documentation on that per Quinn's research. Also, Samuel Smith's untimely death (2 weeks after?) following Joseph and Hyrum has always been a ...

Re: Isaiah 53
Unless this is referring to Christ’s final days on earth, isn’t it inconsistent with the new testament verse that he “grew in favor with God and men?” Also, his triumphal entry into Jerusalem his first time going there in his ministry - seems to have been a popular guy throughout his life. I was tau...

Re: Faith Crisis Contagion
How old is he? My parents are in their early 70’s and I don’t think they could mentally survive a faith crisis. At this point they need Mormonism until they die. 61. I feel for him because he’s in a tough spot with my mom. She’s uber orthodox and might lose her mind if she finds she’s lost him to d...

Faith Crisis Contagion
Over a year and a half ago I was in the full-blown faith crisis mode. My DW fell into step pretty quick along with me once she started looking into the issues. But my parents really struggled with it all, and some really dumb things were said. In particular, my dad was pretty hard on me and in short...

Re: Ruined relationships
I'm so sorry Newme. This is heartbreaking to read. I have a few thoughts that may or may not be helpful. Family relationships, spouse relationships, etc. are so complicated. I'll give you my thoughts from my life perspective. My father is a serial cheater on my mom. The first one was awful (long ter...

Pres Oaks & Free Speech Hypothetical
This isn't exactly doctrinal, but it's related to Mormon pseudo-doctrine as articulated by Dallin Oaks. Oaks is on record effectively saying "do not speak negatively / criticize me or any of the leaders of the church, even if that criticism is correct." In other words, Oaks is effectively saying the...

Re: 2nd Commandment
Based on what I remember about the Hebrew translation, the third commandment is more about using God's name vainly, or for vanity purposes, rather than just about profanity. I took it to mean that God isn't happy with those using his name to get gain, or to those who profess their devotion but have...

Re: Prop 2 turnabout
Well, there are a few things written in to this compromise that sabatoge it. It uses words like prescription, that at attic ally make it illegal. Doctors cannot write a prescription for any form of MJ. It requires a pharmacist to work at the dispensary, which will cause hm to lose his license. It i...

Re: Prop 2 turnabout
It would be nice if "the people" could actually do anything about it, but for now, the theocracy still rules. I hope I live to see the day when they no longer have power, or maybe I can hope to not care at some point? My prediction: in 15-20 years the church will no longer dominate Utah politics. B...

Re: Weak anachronistic arguments
A much more effective way would have been to merely point out that trying to keep a beehive upright in a rotating vessel for 365 plus days would have been messy. Case closed at that point without much counter argument. I think you're forgetting the all-encompassing counter-argument that always work...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression
I had a similar reaction to the Angel post mentioned. Hell hath no fury.... and all that. I also made a point of snuggling up with my DW for a bit. But I want to thank Angel for posting that because the point she is trying to make is both informative and a warning to those of us still happily marri...

Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression
Arcturus,...you used the words "hard core position". I speak from experience and attest to the fact that Mormonism's stance on purity and sexuality is extreme and can cause serious issues for individuals. Sorry for the details but I'll elaborate a little. I was raised in a hard core orthodox home a...

Re: Save My Soul, brother TBM
First of all, what an ass hat. Second, aren't the earliest primary sources pretty solid in that Emma and Oliver were pretty pissed about Joseph having his fling with Fanny Alger, and it was likely sexual in nature? What "reading" is this ass hat talking about? The fun thing about the LDS concept abo...

His podcast was the safe zone for me after I read the essays and realized all was not well in Zion. It confirmed that I was not the only one who was aware of the discrepancies... A large part of my sanity today is largely due to his efforts, his willingness to share TRUTH despite the consequences, ...
