Re: August, 1836

No matter how you look at him, Joseph was an actor, and had honed his craft at playing such different roles as seer, prophet, contrite Christian, and maligned victim, depending on the circumstances.

Re: August, 1836

I would be remiss if I did not mention Radio Free Mormon did an episode dealing with this episode from church history in the last third of the podcast titled, "Treasure Digging with Joseph Smith and John Steinbeck" from last October. https://mormondiscussionpodcast.org/2018/10/radio-free-mormon-044...

Re: Ten Useful Rules

This sounds like it could be the Ten Commandments of Humanism. (I mean this in a good way) Could it be put into words an 8 year old could understand? 1. The coolest thing to learn is how to help other people, even your sisters/brothers. 2. No matter how weird or mean they are, sisters/brothers are p...

Re: August, 1836

How could this "seer" be deceived so easily with treasure hunting at this late stage? This is like the attempt to see the BoM copyright. Hunh? And since this happened at this stage of the game and was a mistake, how do we know that the earlier 'revelations' are true? I remember wondering about thes...

Re: August, 1836

Good point, Hagoth. I think this does indicate that the pious fraud view has merit. At some point whether early, middle, or late, or on leap years, Joseph really thought he was a seer.

I though Steven Covey should have been a GA. His book “Spiritual Roots of Human Relations” was way ahead of the curve back on the 70’s
Didn’t he leave the church for having an affair?

I don’t think so. That would have been a big news item.

Re: Pres Oaks & Free Speech Hypothetical

Slight derail but not much. ;) In one of his talks Oaks uses Jude 8 which says it is wrong to "speak evil of dignities" to support his false doctrine that it is wrong to critique Mormon leadership. But "speaking truth to power" is not an "evil" thing if that power is a fraud. It's actually a good t...

Re: August, 1836

In D&C 111:6 the Lords promises Joseph that "I will give you power to pay them," that is Joseph's and/or the Churches debts. It never happened. :o

August, 1836

I'am working on a Documentary History of the L.D.S. Church- arranged chronologically, mostly for my own curiosity, although I would like to get it online, and set it up so other people could contribute. The month of August, 1836 is a curious month in Documentary Church History. Joseph, Hyrum, Sidney...

Re: Priesthood age changes

I'm guessing somebody in the hierarchy figured it would be easier to keep records that way. It's a little skewed from the age requirement for public schools, which is usually the first of September. (shrug  )

Re: Have any GA's talked about a faith/truth crisis?

GA's? Not that I know of. I did have a Bishop in Georgia while on my mission who stood up in opening exercises, explained how the Church calling was taking too much time out of his life and damaging his family and marriage. He walked down, took his wife by the hand and walked out through the door w...

Re: from Reddit: Both Pills

I take three pills every day. Whenever I study I still ask myself, if the Church was true would this (various topic) make sense? If Christianity was true would this (topic) make sense? If materialism/deism/atheism was true would this (topic) make sense? It's called exploring the marketplace of idea...

Re: Have any GA's talked about a faith/truth crisis?

I would think for a GA to even admit that they had experienced a faith crisis would be like putting a damper on their "church progression". Kind of like, "Yeah, you made it through that bad spot but what were you doing there in the first place?" Yep. With the connection between sin and doubting any...

Re: Have any GA's talked about a faith/truth crisis?

I would suspect that if any of them did, it is carefully censored and would never be allowed to be talked about in public. If knowledge of a real faith crisis got out, it would put a huge wedge in their divine providence image. I think by the time they get to the Q15 stage, they are vetted as exper...

Have any GA's talked about a faith/truth crisis?

I'm interested by the fact that I've never heard about a General Authority who has talked about working through a faith crisis. I'm aware Elder Holland has dealt with depression, and other leaders have dealt with losing a loved one, but no G.A. has been down the rabbit hole, or had a shelf break, or...

Re: Tonga, a microcosm of church accountability and accuracy?

What a great way for DW to find out that the rosy picture the church wants to paint is quite different from reality. I have heard of other countries where the church statistics and the official government statistics are significantly different. google 'religions in Brazil' and scroll down to the LDS...

Re: The Return of the Book of Abraham

This is literally all you need to know about what a complete hack Kerry Muhlestein is: “I start out with an assumption that the Book of Abraham and the Book of Mormon, and anything else that we get from the restored gospel, is true,” he said. “Therefore, any evidence I find, I will try to fit into ...
