Re: Sealing Cancellation
So many people are married for "time and all eternity"....and the church emphasizes over and over the "eternity" portion. Why not place a little more effort on the "time" portion,...hunh? If the church did that, perhaps the "eternity" might work a little better. That was one of my big realizations ...

Re: Facts on controversial topics
[This is another update on a different controversial topic, that originated on a now-locked thread and included a different thread. Moderators, if this is too off-topic let me know and I'll take it down, but I think there is value in knowing more about what some quoted, referenced public figures are...

Re: What about NewNameNoah?
In the third episode (which I still haven't finished listening to!) Dehlin plays a pretty heavy-handed devil's advocate regarding whether Mike's actions have done more good than bad and he evokes the backlash effect, but in episode two he points out that external irritation has done more to actuall...

Re: Do over sacrament prayers..
When I was a priest, the bishop directed us in taking one priest quorum meeting and going around and having everyone practice the sacrament prayers a few times. Practice is good, but I'm not sure how helpful this really was.

Re: Are you anti-free speech?
Here's a briefer, though harsher, explanation of the topic:
(I'm not saying the sentiments expressed in the XKCD comic exactly apply in this discussion, but they are applicable a lot of times when someone raises the call for free speech.)

Re: Are you anti-free speech?
The U.S. has very strong free speech protections. I'm definitely in favor of these protections. That being said, free speech rights, like all others, are not absolute. The classic example is that you don't have the right to shout "Fire!" in a crowded theater. There are a number of other exceptions t...

[This post is a bit of a deviation from recent discussion on this thread, but it harks back to some other comments that occasioned the creation of this thread. I thought it would be good enough to drop these comments here.] In some comments a few weeks back, Mark Regnerus's "New Family Structures" s...

Re: Guns at church?
So it brings up the point that nothing is definitive and both sides have an agenda and bias. For example the last 2 active shooter events cited (walmart and the church killing) seem to disprove the notion presented in the daily show thesis. "Disproved" is way too strong of a term. A couple of anecd...

Re: What about NewNameNoah?
One of the things I was most interested in seeing with Mike's interview was how he did it. I was curious what methods he used. The interview came out pretty clearly on that point and was pretty informative. Basically, it's good old-fashioned in-depth investigation. The staple of quality, deep, inves...

Re: What about NewNameNoah?
What do you think? Is Mike a hero or a demon? I rather think that's a false dichotomy. People aren't generally either heroes or demons. People are people, with good and bad characteristics. I watched the interview, even though I very rarely watch or listen to Mormon Stories or anything like that. M...

Here's an alternate view from experts who train police and first responders: https://shar.es/1PMcO8 The statistics I referenced came from people who train police and first responders and wrote the report about the effectiveness of victim responses, including the use of deadly force. (Via "The Daily...

Gender Revolution
On one of the now-deleted threads, someone mentioned a National Geographic issue earlier this year about gender. It is the January 2017 issue, likely available at your local library if you don't have a subscription. It is titled, "Gender Revolution", with articles "Making a Man", "The Science of Gen...

Re: Guns at church?
Do you think many of the members will go rogue? Someone once said that the one thing Mormons love more than their church is their guns. I've suspected that the Church has been leery to put that choice to the test with the concealed gun permit crowd. I don't know how it's posted or made known in Uta...

Very few, though there are enough to make for a few good, faith-promoting GC stories. Whether embellished or not.

Re: How do I teach primary?
I've told them no, too. I've been taken off the lists. They don't really know how to deal with me. Yeah, that was my experience. I just stopped complying with demands where I didn't agree to them in first place. And not agreeing to all demands put to me. They didn't know how to deal with that. The ...

Re: How do I teach primary?
Your ward still uses volunteerism for chapel cleaning? My stake has long resorted to voluntoldism with a healthy dose of public shaming. At least it's organized in a nice excel sheet. The last few years I was involved in the Church, I took Nancy Reagan's advice and just said, "No". When they called...

Re: Guns at church?
Mass shootings are far from the principal causes of gun violence and death. They make bigger headlines, but are a significantly smaller number. Having a gun provides very little protection in the case of a mass shooting. The reverse is actually more likely -- having a gun puts you at higher risk. On...

Re: Guns at church?
Does anyone here think that the issues that we are all aware of in the LDS church potentially make it a 'target' for a mass shooting? Am I more likely to be the victim of a mass shooting in sacrament meeting, or at the mall? Probably not much different, though I'd guess the mall has a slightly high...

Re: LGBT Apologetics
The period of active homosexual reparative therapy at BYU was horrific. I don't suppose it is any suprise that the President of BYU at the time was Dallin H. Oaks, senior apostle and likely future prophet. I can't imagine him ever doing a news conference that was not tightly controlled since all it...
