Re: Polygamy and later sexual repression
I watched a couple of episodes of the Netflix documentary 3 wives about a polygamist group near Moab, Utah. I'm not sure how accurately it portrays their lives, but there are some interesting dynamics. First, it seems like wife#1 in both family groups that are featured is the woman that is most secu...

Re: Giving Machines = reverse ATM
I think y'all are trying to look for warts with these giving machines. I fail to see this as a bad thing. Sure, people can give directly to these charities and causes, but people don't always do that. People are lazy and people are busy. I think this is a fantastic idea to make giving easier. Why sh...

Re: 2nd Commandment
I thought that was the third commandment. The second one is about graven images, isn't it? Based on what I remember about the Hebrew translation, the third commandment is more about using God's name vainly, or for vanity purposes, rather than just about profanity. I took it to mean that God isn't ha...

Re: The Return of the Book of Abraham
Did everyone notice the wording in the desert news article when talking about the parts of the scroll that was not destroyed? The description is accurate but misleading. "One piece that survived" comes across or reads as the ONLY piece, and if nearly 50% of the Egyptian scroll narratives beside a fa...

That linked list was accurate on my wife's new name, but wrong on mine.
I don't remember what day I received my endowment, but my name is not in the vicinity of possible dates. Maybe I was special. Hah

Re: General NOMfrence Sunday Morning
Wow, Pres Nelson is really doubling down on this issue. Is he saying that Satan has a hold on Pres Hinckley for being pragmatic and sensible about our name? On Pres Monson for allowing the "I'm a Mormon" campaign to occur right under his nose? For Pres Benson to get up and sing "I'm a Marmin boy" in...

Re: Has anyone purchased Jennifer Finlayson Fife's online courses?
Yes, we've purchased and yes she's good. She doesn't preach a traditional LDS perspective. Her approach seems data driven. I would recommend her program to anyone, regardless of their religious orientation or affiliation. Is JFF able to unwind the common issues that arise from growing up in a highl...

Re: BYU-I Still Kicking Out Sex Assault Victims
It's beyond ridiculous. Now, being accused does not mean he's guilty, but it looks like he did admit to touching her inappropriately knowing that she was intoxicated. Unusual for a college guy? No. Appropriate, moral, or even legal? Hell no. Should it matter what exactly he did? Of course, and it di...

Re: 53 Wards/Branches Discontinued in Mexico
Maybe related, I've noticed that every missionary from our ward has a mission that's combining with another mission. I think the sudden influx of missionaries that occurred with the age change has leveled out and now we're seeing even fewer kids go and stay out. It's also not as big of a social emba...

Re: Goodwill vs Desert Industries
My SIL was similar case. Disabled but very capable of doing many things quite well when given time, support, etc. She loved her job at DI, but was cut suddenly after a few months. The reason given was that their policy was only to employ temporarily while the disabled person received training. Then ...

Re: Goodwill vs Desert Industries
I was a bit disappointed with one DI that would only employ some disabled persons for no more than three months. If the people did not find another job in that interim they were jobless. No offer or efforts to help them find jobs or provide any real job training applicable to what they could do, and...

Re: Things that make you go huh?
You can't project too much from one picture, but it's interesting to look at the facial expressions and body language. Nelson looks pretty much as he always does, Eyring looks like he's not enjoying this and he's not appearing to offer much if a handshake, the woman (Brigham?) looks to be enthralled...

Re: Looking for a home...
I've appreciated reading this topic and I can relate to the feeling of wanting to stay in the church but maybe not be of the church, so to speak. I have tried to stay in, to "lift where I stand", to ignore the ridiculous, embrace the good, support the unconventional, and provide an example and occas...

Re: Steven Hassan's survey on controlling groups
Well, after reading his introduction, I don't think he writes all that well. Sorry, but for a doctoral student, this isn't great. I'm interested in more of the research he's basing his ideas upon, so some more support there would be nice.

Re: Steven Hassan's survey on controlling groups
That being said, he did say that he was launching a research initiative to back his model up with science. The only problem is, that's not really how science works. You don't generally start with a conclusion and then go out to find evidence for it. So I'm sort of ambivalent toward the whole thing....

Re: Elder Holland vs. the 1949 First Presidency
Holland is protecting the church. Simple as that. I think the leaders are mostly kind men who probably understand most of the issues but feel it is better to build a strong current church than dwell on or apologize for past mistakes. It's political spin. It's what politicians and big corporations do...

I have to admit that I also did not fully understand the negative impact this fake article would have on black members of the church. I understand better now, and I feel it's the right thing for the author to apologize. He told a lie. The lie hurt some people. When you make a mistake, it's good to a...

Re: Hello, I’m new
Something to keep in mind with parents... For most of us, our parents love us unconditionally and want us to be happy. They may believe the best way or only way to true happiness is through the church and gospel, but they still love us. Have you considered asking them the questions that have bothere...
