Re: Coffee

Coffee drinking is not a question on the apostate temple recommend. You are welcome to find more individually appealing ways to ignore the Word of Wisdom. Keep in mind that alas is doing this for her health: I started trying coffee as a way of medicating ADD. I don't like the stuff, so I choke it d...

Alas, you noticed the same thing I eventually did. Very interesting, and significant, information in that bit right there.

Re: Education ranking by religious groups

The PRRI presents and orders the data a bit differently than the others. The Kosmin & Keysar study solely shows those with college degrees. The Pew study orders by those with college degrees but shows other, lesser education levels. The PRRI study breaks those with college degrees into two categorie...

Re: Education ranking by religious groups

Part of the variation seems to be which groups the study counts, or how people are counted into groups. The Pew study breaks it down into the most number of groups and Mormons fall right about the middle, just above the average for U.S. adults. The Kosmin & Keysar study has a medium amount of groups...

Re: Education ranking by religious groups

The rankings vary a bit across different studies.

Here is a graphic from the Pew study, published in 2016, using data from 2014:

Re: Facts on controversial topics

In some of the heated discussions on other threads that inspired this thread, there were some vile statements made regarding transgender people and how they should be inhumanely treated and disregarded. I won't repeat the ridiculous, mean statements here. I just ran across an excellent article on th...

Re: The Ghost of Homophobia Past

I felt the narrative was getting a bit flat and very intentionally inserted the personal story about Maurice to try to give it a more personal feel. It was an important story in my personal development, but it was a bit outside the narrative of the podcast. I still wanted to put it in there to try ...

Re: The Ghost of Homophobia Past

It's quite a good podcast. A few observations: You repeatedly characterize this church-produced document as very primeval. I find it interesting how much that has changed and how recently. At the time it was published, the document wasn't terribly out of place among the conservative, religious folks...

Re: In Which Feminism creates Marriage and Family Problems

I'm going to behave as if someone cares about my thoughts on the Emotional Labor topic, even though I wasn't actually asked about it. Mostly because I was already thinking about expounding on the topic. I'd also like to see Thoughtful's response. Women do a disproportionate amount of the household w...

Re: In Which Feminism creates Marriage and Family Problems

These are the tough parts of relationships and being involved in communities. There are no simple answers. These sorts of things take work. The first thing that comes to my mind is that we need to recognize that cannot really make someone see things the way we do. My wife and I agree on lots of thin...

Re: Snufferites

I think you're spot on Reuben. While the effects are most noticeable among the Millennial generation, I'm confident it will vector through other age groups. Typically, social change comes from the younger generation who then change the culture as they age. In the case of LGBT acceptance, though, the...

Re: Snufferites

If I had to put my finger on the single biggest threat to the church (apart from its own policies and behaviors), from what I see on other forums like Reddit, I think it would have to be the CES letter. I have seen so many people say something like, "by the time I finished the CES letter I was done...

Re: First Sunday Councils

I'm not sure about RS, but I know how this will play out in my ward's priesthood quorums. The elders will give it a shot but it will just be the presidency talking the first week. After that they'll pass something around and take turns reading. The High Priests will feature a handful of guys trying...

Re: Snufferites

To me this is a much bigger threat to the church than all us NOMs. Someone who gives the people some substNce to their belief. I doubt it. Overall demographic shifts are not towards more religion. Sure there are always those who will switch from one church to another, though that's hugely dominated...

Re: The benefits of the youth program

The Mormon youth program can be pretty impressive and effective, when it works right. Not a lot of other churches have anything like it. Or other secular groups. Though there are some reasonable comparisons. The Catholic parish that hosts my scout troop doesn't have anything like it. Our troop opera...

Re: Higher Historical Criticism and Mormon Doctrine

The prophecy of the virgin birth as quoted by Matthew and others is found in Isaiah 7:14. Read it all by itself and it kind of works the way Matthew used it. Now read it in context of the rest of the chapter and it has nothing to do with Jesus. Prooftextimg is an age old practice.

Re: 21st century social conventions

I suppose I do feel in the same way we cannot toss the constitution because Thomas Jefferson had slaves, we cannot toss the church on account of Joseph maybe being a horn-dog. Fortunately enough, there are enough other problems that add up for me to take into consideration as well. I'm definitely n...

When LoF went into the D&C all three of the first presidency signed off on it including Joseph.
The "Lectures on Faith" were the doctrine part of the Doctrine and Covenants.
