Re: Postmodernism anybody?
Do you know what a public accommodation is? Do you know the laws and the reasons for those laws regarding public accommodation? The rights you claim to assert are not recognized as rights of a public accommodation. Further the business isn't religious. It's a separate entity from the people employed...

Re: What is killing the church?
Church was boring in the 70s and 80s too. I was severely bored. Correlation was in full swing and the lessons cycled just like they do now. I remember porn and masturbation lessons starting when I was 12 in the 70s continuing all the way through. The 70s was the era of the little factory speech and ...

Confirms 72% are gone by age 20. That's in line with what is claimed for the 70s statement.

I wasn't a strong conservative as a Mormon. My politics were socially liberal and fiscally conservative, Libertarian mostly and remain so.

Re: The "coming Mormon revolution"?
Mormonism has evolved in my lifetime. We weren't Christian, now we are Blacks were cursed, now they're not Interracial marriage was overtly discouraged now it's lessened or gone. Young earth has become we don't know No death before the fall is evolving now, related to garden of Eden was on Earth and...

Re: Starting to believe
"This specific idea of God seems to make me a better person, his idea helps me deal with life, therefore I think I will believe in it." I question that it is reasonable. It has many hidden assumptions that are packed into that statement. It's sloppy. Indeed your use of rational strikes me as apropp...

Re: Starting to believe
Wouldn't we then define pretty much all religious people as delusional? I realize that many do, and that religious people bristle at this, and that this is where logic, philosophy, and religion collide. At some point don't we need to stop forcing faith in a box, let religious people have some room ...

Re: Starting to believe
So, I get what you are saying. Inherently flawed though, depends on what a person want to govern their life. If it is logic and reason then it is flawed. If it is emotion and feeling then asking what you want to believe is perfectly valid. I don't think so. There is manipulated emotion as we well k...

Re: Starting to believe
I think utilitarian philosophy is strong personally but many struggle with the moral implications. I'm also strongly evidencialist. So yes, I think much of common morality is rather arbitrary and weakly supported. I don't think there is an absolute reason or meaning to all of this. The reason is to ...

Re: Starting to believe
There are logical and philosophical paths to support all of those positions (and challenges to some). But the strength of the arguments has a lot to do with what you set as basic assumptions and how few of them you make. Rigorous skepticism and challenges of the assumptions is how you strengthen you...

Re: Starting to believe
What do you want to believe in? This is a dangerous starting point. The following is from the Anathem wiki. Diax is fictional, but possible actual sources for the idea are also given. Diax's Rake "Never believe a thing simply because you want it to be true" A warning against wishful thinking attrib...

I don't know. He sold all the same lies and rhetoric as the rest. He just played good cop about it and was more soft sell. He perpetuated apostolic in person witness of Jesus Christ; the veracity of the first vision; personal visits to the afterlife attested to by his wife as well; the historicity o...

Re: The Inoculation is Working
Why do we teach a monotheistic OT when the Hebrew were polytheists until after Babylon. Jahweh and El were pagan gods. There were at least six (pagan) Jewish temples. The law of Moses is a much later retroactive rewrite. All of this contradicts the claims of nephi. Why does nephi quote deutero Isaia...

Re: "And it came to pass" - evidence for BoM authenticity
Hebrew was well developed at the time of the BoM and compact enough to the purpose given the claimed size of the plates. There was no reason to go to reformed Egyptian except to give Joseph a dodge for his claim / con. It's actually suspicious to make the claim of necessity for reformed Egyptian. T...
