Re: Saturday Morning Session Thread!!!!
Does anyone know when all the sustainings and church stats happen?
Re: Oh my God
I’ve been careful not to say this my whole life as a Mormon, but now I don’t care at all when people say it. It’s just another expression to add emphasis.

Re: "If God wanted us to believe in him...he'd exist."
Definitely a wrinkled brow, because the statement seems to be logically equivalent to "If God exists, he wants us to believe in him." Axiom 1: exists g, IsGod(g) Axiom 2: WantsUsToBelieve(g) -> exists g', g'=g By axiom 1, WantsUsToBelieve(g) -> true; therefore, WantsUsToBelieve(g). The problem is t...

Re: What are you doing during GC?
TBM mother is coming to visit so it will be in most of the time...I won’t be able to hold in my snide remarks though so not sure how it will go. I will not be happy to waste a weekend listening to mediocre advice from a buncha old dudes.

Re: Switched off vs. Pushed out?
I was switched off first, then pushed out (although I still attend for the wife). The true history left me with nothing to have a testimony in, and now going to church feels like getting kicked in the brain. I relate to almost nothing that is said at church and so I am pushed out. The members have n...

Re: "Are You Mormon?"
I tell people I was raised Methodist. It saves a lot of time and energy. I can’t do this yet because I still want credit for doing the whole Mormon thing. Not sure why. I want people to know that I was all in, but consciously decided to leave it behind. Of course I also feel like I have to justify ...

Re: Honoring Belief
I still have tremendous respect for anyone who’s willing to ACT on their beliefs. Not just enough habit to go to church on Sundays and Wednesday nights but those that tore their own roots out of the ground and said, “That’s true. That’s the Lord calling. We’re leaving it all behind.” Woof. So what ...

Re: Is belief a choice?
Isn't it a little bit of both? We are slaves to our irrational minds, until we let our rational minds make sense of it. Once that happens we are slaves to the conclusions of our rational minds. Certainly it's a mix of both. Though it just seems really odd to describe us a slave to our rational mind...

Re: Is belief a choice?
I say belief is not a choice. Belief is more of an emotion than a rational thought, and people don't get to choose their emotions. We can choose to put ourselves in situations where an emotion is more likely, e.g. choose to watch a sad movie, choose to be with people where we are usually happy, etc...

Re: Is belief a choice?
There are a lot of interesting thoughts here. I expected to see a lot of "it depends", so I purposefully left only the two choices to make you pick a side. It is hard to define belief, because it is such an abstract concept, but to consider in the Mormon context as I see it, I do not think belief is...

Re: You are not so smart/Backfire effect
The logic doesn’t have to be - “we have found no steel swords, so no steel swords exist”, but rather an issue of probability. We have to go here because no one can “prove a negative”. We instead have to rely on drawing the most reasonable conclusion based on the information we have. Here is a great ...

Who is this Thayne? I have only seen the current NOM board. He must be fairly well known is there are rumors going around Reddit about him.

Re: Coffee
I have lots of experimenting to do still, but vanilla iced coffee with milk from Starbucks has been my go to so far. Another great one is vanilla iced coffee from chick fil a. That stuff is so good, but pretty sweet. It may be a good first time drink. I wish I could have a coffee machine in the hous...

Re: Brushes with "the other side"?
I have no stories to share, but i am also interested in hearing any stories. A family member of mine claims to have had a “physical fight” (like a wrestle of sorts) with an evil spirit. The facts don’t seem to line up in his story, but he is a sane TBM and believes it sincerly. I think it’s in his m...

Re: Asking for a suggestion
Can anybody out there suggest some fo the best places on the internet to debunk FairMormon articles? My interest is piqued about the apologetic topic, and I want to delve just for curiosity sake. But, I don't want to spend inordinate amounts of time doing comparative searches and reading to find so...

Re: Declining convert baptisms
So is it just me, or does 240k convert baptisms last year seem like a high number? I was actually surprised to read it was this many. I know Africa is busy, but that's alot. And we know they didn't come from US/Europe/Japan- industrialized nations. I can only imagine the focus groups working on the...

Re: Doctrinal Questions
I'm wondering how many people from the meeting will go less active or go NOM. My feeling is that it is the right thing to do (open discussion) however, it will bring things to a head and hasten people distancing themselves from the church. I'm not so sure this is true. People, including intelligent...

Re: Doctrinal Questions
I will return and report after the next meeting - it was agreed that we would prepare to discuss the first vision. The SP said he didn't know how many people would show up and was setting up a half circle of chairs before the meeting. By the time we started we had a full room plus a few standing in ...
