Re: There is no such thing as free will
Yeah, not a huge fan of The Hitch. I just don't think that believing that religion is a sham (which I do) naturally leads to a basis to uniquely discriminate against members of religions, and especially not one religion over others.

Re: There is no such thing as free will
What is it about Sam Harris that you dislike? His philosophical positions sit on some pretty badly shifting sands and tend toward a weird sort of pseudo-philosophical Islamophobia. His definition of free will is weird and I don't like it. Basically, most of the criticisms leveled here: https://www....

Re: Inoculation? Polygamy Taught the Second Week of Seminary
oh no I missed my homework assignment of deprogramming my kids from this lesson. I keep asking them what they learned and they keep saying basically "oh nothing" or some weird Friend story. sheeeeeeeeeesh. (although my kids have a pretty good moral compass / skeptical bent, maybe they just shrugged ...

Re: There is no such thing as free will
Jumping in here to add my completely bullsh*t personal opinion that: a) we don't have free will, b) no version of a society can survive without believing in at least a weak form of free will, so it's necessary to act like we do, and c) listening to Sam Harris gives me a headache. Oh and d) the best ...

Re: Is there still good in the church?
I found that it was just too hard to do actual good in the world through the political organizing I've been involved in, then go to a place that I feel does much less good in my community but to have that place claim to be the kingdom of God. Well not to mention that I'm no longer a fan of either ki...

Re: Marital First Aid for Exmo/Questioner Couple
I'm in Portland (though we were in Phoenix 5 years ago!). I found this group through Mormon Spectrum. Maybe I can find a different mormon group for her through it too (maybe one that's like liberal but still believing-ish), and maybe that would help. I have already basically given up everything else...

Re: McKenna Bears Testimony in Bishop's Ward
It's hard to know what will get traction in the greater mormon world of news etc. I'm inclined to believe that the only bad press is no press here, and that McKenna did her level best to make sure that "no press" wasn't an option. It's probably not going to convince any TBMs, but most of them were n...

Re: Soundtrack of the NOM
So many good choices so far, so many good possibilities still remain. I'm going to choose two: You can't go wrong with Built To Spill's incredibly tongue-in-cheek Randy Described Eternity: Every thousand years This metal sphere Ten times the size of Jupiter Floats just a few yards past the earth You...

Marital First Aid for Exmo/Questioner Couple
Hi, I'm temple-married, 10 years, 3 kids, with a questioner who has decided to stay despite not believing the church is there only true one. I don't attend at all anymore and have no interest in going back. She takes the kids every week and has a temple recommend (I was going to sac mtg to help with...

Re: Broke the news that I'm "questioning"
This is really really similar to my situation. My wife gave up on the idea that the church is only-true, but still has a belief in a god and thinks the church is still "true" in the way that lots of other churches are true. By rights, I should be out on an exmo site and she should be here, lol. But ...

It is absolutely hilarious that he's going down this road out of sheer boredom. I love this story, hope DW goes that way soon.

Re: Apostles and perfection
Just once in the church, I'd like to see a machinist or plumber become a GA, though[...]If anyone knows of a GA that was working class, please correct me. Classism is just one of those "imperfections" we're supposed to forgive I guess? Seriously, though here's the current set of 12: Ballard—owned c...

Gotta love that good ol' "common consent" where you get booted for encouraging people to vote a certain way.

Hi! I'm Ben, essentially 100% non-practicing since January 2017, DW is vaguely orthoprax but a questioner too. Three kids, making things work so far, but it's actually been pretty hard relationship-wise (I was questioning / less-active since well before she started doing serious questioning). I woul...
