Re: Taking off the garment

Well, I just went to the store and got new underwear. I'm looking forward to them. This is a strange thing to be doing in my 30's.

Re: Taking off the garment

OH, I didn't know that. I thought that since you had to give your recommend when buying if you didn't have one they wouldn't sell it to you. Jeez, I was counting on that to pacify my mother.

Re: Who Created YOU?

Thanks for this Brent. I never really thought of myself as identifying as Mormon first and Christian second, but I totally did. When I decided to do some research on my own and to use sources that were outside of the acceptable list, I told myself that this was like a refrigerator. Something stinks ...

Re: Taking off the garment

I turned in my temple recommend a while ago. You can't buy them without a valid recommend, so why would I continue wearing them when I am not even allowed to buy them? I wear the garments because it helps me have more friends. It signals that you are in the tribe. Some people want out of the tribe a...

Re: Now I'm *really* pissed off.

Man, that blows. There is not enough that can be said about the unhealthy approaches we develop towards sexuality on account of the church. Be totally careful not to let your anger towards your brother's situation to get focused onto your wife's underwear choice. Those are two totally different situ...

Re: Gospel doctrine 2017

I think a combination of what Brent and nibbler have said is in order. I would rather see a separate forum primarily to keep it looking organized. It would be easier to refer back to things, make a return and report style post, and even start threads that may be weeks ahead of the lesson if it was a...

Re: Gospel doctrine 2017

Cool. So how do we get a sub forum going? Who is the head honcho around here anyway? I can message whoever. I like the idea of a sub forum with a weekly thread. If it's a busy week and nobody starts one, that's fine but at least the organizational option is already set up. I don't anticipate that th...

Re: Gospel doctrine 2017

The essays are a great starting place, but for all their progressiveness they are full of inaccuracies, simplifications, diversions, and omissions. I realize that baby steps are all that can be expected, but for those of us who can't or don't want to stop attending SS the opportunities to shoehorn a...

I don't think that most people who land on this board to stay are the "new baptized fervor" type?

Re: Gospel doctrine 2017

Not that it can't be done but what's the ultimate goal? Break Sister Bluehair? Drive people from the church? Reach out to the quiet unsettled sorta believer and help them...what?. In my mind the ultimate goal is to remind sis. Blue hair along and all her cronies that her opinion is not the only one...

Re: Gospel doctrine 2017

The worry I would have is that this would be a thread that would enable "that guy" behavior in people who otherwise might not. A review might be in order but by front-loading you can create situations where folks are just blindsiding innocent Gospel Doctrine teachers. I remember teaching Gospel Doc...

Gospel doctrine 2017

So I have detected an anticipation and a dread of the church history year in GD in the nom/progressive circles. I don't know if it was this forum or some other place someone suggested we have a regular posting about upcoming lessons that might enable some more thought provoking questions to be asked...

Re: Taking off the garment

Thanks for all the replies. It is helpful to see what everybody's reason is for keeping them or chucking them. I feel weird for not believing in what the G's stand for, but yet still have a hard time taking them off. There definitely is something to be said for conditioning by repetition.

Re: Taking off the garment

I'd love some ideas to get the wife out of hers. Would it be too cruel to roll hers around in some attic insulation before folding them with the laundry? Genius. Maybe preface this with a discussion abut how we should ask by prayer if the garment is true. "I don't know Honey, maybe this is the answ...

My boss comes from an uber-active and all-in Mormon family. He quit when he turned 18 and never went back. I go to church with his dad and get asked to bring him back to church every week. Anyway, we were on an out of town trip recently and talked about the church. He needed to use my Ipad for somet...

Taking off the garment

I am curious tonight about the reasons people on this forum wear their garments if they still do. I do, I don't want to, but for some reason I am having a hard time taking them off. I do dread social confrontations that will arise from people knowing that I do not wear them anymore. I feel like ther...

SM for me was awful as well. Talks about Joseph smith from the couple missionaries. She even incorporated sound effects in her talk when it came to the story of Joseph's leg operation. Full on sound effects I'm talkin groaning, little screams, gasps of surprise etc...

Re: What is the priesthood anyway?

I see this as an crucial question in anyone's faith journey. Especially mine. From a tbm perspective, it is the reason behind everything we do in the church. Why not pay charitable contributions to a more deserving source? Because priesthood. Why not be a cafeteria Mormon? Because priesthood. Why no...

Re: Weird or not

This is all kinds of weird, but is is far from abnormal. That situation has happened in my family. While we are on this topic I have a funny story to relate. Dressing the dead is a responsibility I have shlepped. Outside the Mormon corridor, funeral homes will offer a time after embalming when relig...
