Re: Upset by Elder Holland Story

The worst part is, I bought it. I waste a lot of time regretting my rationalizations, but to do so is self abuse so I don't allow it to take much root. That said, it sounds like negative experience with the church has had a pretty profound effect on you so I wouldn't minimize it or dismiss it, but ...

Re: I still love you.

In Mrs. Doubtfire when Robin Williams asks his brother to make him a woman and his brother bursts into a joyous hug and says, "I'm so happy for you"! Your family isn't doing that. It's the word "still". When I homeschooled my son, my father said, "you do what you need to do to raise your son to be ...

I especially like how they develop the characters who choose to help her. Different people, easily negatively stereotyped, sensitively written and portrayed.

I think you might be thinking of Jainism when you talk about pacifist religion, though I hesitate to assume anything concerning another's thinking.

Re: Anyone Else Watch The OA?

I thought the final scene with the dance was narmish. I got what they were trying to do but it just didn't sell me and I couldn't help but groan. However, the series itself was very engaging.

Re: Book of Mormon Musical

I've seen a 20 minute clip of it and didn't care for what I saw. I just thought it was dull and lacked humor. Lots of people like it though.

Re: Mormons Against Marijuana

I'm completely in favor of legalizing marijuana. I'm for taking the crime out of it. Tax it if you want, but spending millions of dollars in policing it, along with the incarceration of thousands of people dosent make sence to me. Our current corrections system is basically prison for profit, so in...

Re: Buddhist Monks And Martial Arts

Buddhism isn't pacifistic, it's non-aggressive. There may be some sects of Buddhism that are but it's not universal.

Muay Thai is one of the most devastating martial arts and the vast majority of Thailand is Buddhist.

Re: Potlucks

Worst: There was a elderly man that brought some chicken soup stuff that was really good. Chicken was quite tender, and the broth was very well balanced and rich. My dad asked him how he made it. The man told him what ingredients he used and then said that he put the pot on the woodstove and would ...

Re: Finally Saw Rogue One

I think Clarke, Asimov, and Heinlein are sort of the classic "holy trinity" of sci fi, if I'm not mistaken. David Brin is interesting but he focuses on the wrong things IMO (too much character development, if that can be said to be a thing) and not enough on the tech and concept part. Dan Simmons di...

I don't know if this is in line with what you are doing but the best way to tell this is in voice, and I thought the crowd here would dig it either way.

Re: Do people really get divorced over the church

I think it's often a final straw. And for many it's a big straw. But if it was the only problem in a marriage, I would guess that to be a rare occurrence.

BTW who would you say your favorite author was? Mine would be Robert Heinlein without hesitation. Starship Troopers is easily my favorite novel, though critically I would say The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is the best one of his that I've read.

Re: Finally Saw Rogue One

Star Trek is really hit or miss for me. I like it, and enjoy the tech aspect of it when it comes up, but there's something about it that's always made me less enthusiastic about it. If I was to be said to be a big fan of anything, I think it would be Warhammer 40K.

Re: Finally Saw Rogue One

I'm so with you document. I still maintain that Episode VII did nothing but diminish the Star Wars universe and that scrapping the EU for that film was like trading a blue chip stock for a wooden nickel. But Rogue One proved itself. Whereas Vector Prime curb stomps TFA in terms of quality story, R1 ...

Re: What was your first crack

From the very beginning of my conversion. I got hit with the usual suspects (Kingdom of the Cults, Godmakers, etc). The problem was, many of the things in those sensationalist products turned out to be salesmanship for the converted in evangelical churches. So many of the "criticisms" of the church ...

Re: Next time an apologist throws the Bible under the bus...

The fact that the Bible is generally received by believers as if God himself had written it himself in King James English as it happed is pretty wacky when you think about it. To be completely honest, I am more open to the idea of a deistic interpretation of all alleged scriptures than I come acros...

Re: Sick of Satan

My dad and step mom are evangelicals, so boy-howdy am I used to Satan being responsible for everything they didn't like. It was like living in a Chick tract whenever I'd visit them. Everything from certain cereal commercial jingles to the theory of evolution was the product of (an apparently very bu...
