Re: Forced Turning Point

So, your job is to convince them that they are just as capable of inspiration as anybody else on earth, and do they really think God loves them so little that he isn’t on speaking terms. That God plays games of “I’m not speaking to so and so, so I will tell this other guy to tell them what I want t...

Re: Sunday Afternoon NOMference!!!

I liked Dieter’s talk the best. He spoke of Christ. He mentioned Easter. He spoke of his big tent Mormonism. Sadly, I think he is alone in that vision. Maybe when he is president he will act on it. I felt like he is one of the few that understands the different viewpoints of Mormonism. Hmm, I thoug...

Re: The New Church Logo

Since the new logo is far too detailed to be used in an app logo, newspaper printing, etc., we're likely going to see the silhouette version a lot. I don't think it works out too well, but what do I know, I'm not a prophet-seer-revelator-graphic-designer.

Re: Sacrament meeting talk on the search for truth

What does the church actually teach members, to seek truth or to seek confirmation of a very specific truth? It's a rhetorical question. It's been my experience that we're less seekers of truth and more seekers of validation. It's rhetorical because it's so obvious for we who have gone through the ...

Sacrament meeting talk on the search for truth

Hello fellow NOMs! I feel a little bad coming here for advice when I post so seldom, but just know that I do check in from time to time and I appreciate the unique tone and community of this board. It was a lifesaver when I first joined about four years ago, and it's nice to know there are others ou...

Re: NOMference Fall 2019 Sunday Afternoon

The way RMN is going on about the big to-do set for April I noticed several comments here about April's gen conf. What did Nelson say about it? Basically he said since it's the bicentennial of the PoGP version of the first vision, April conference will be super duper special, "unlike any you've eve...

Re: Womens NOMference 2019!!!

When is Oaks going to shut the hell up about this? He's been obsessed with it since the 80s. It honestly would not shock me if he turned out to be one of these lifelong homophobes who is actually gay himself.

How about looking for meaningful symbolism in the myth of the Easter Bunny?
Picturing how a discussion of fertility would go over...I may have to try this

Re: Teaching Gospel Doctrine for Easter tomorrow, got any ideas?

I don't believe in the resurrection or a divine Jesus, but I know a major complaint/criticism of Mormon church meetings is they don't focus enough on Jesus. I heard that a lot as a member, but TBH I found it a relief. There's nothing more aggravating then evangelical sermons where it's just a broke...

Teaching Gospel Doctrine for Easter tomorrow, got any ideas?

So I'm still a GD teacher, and it's my turn tomorrow. I don't believe in the resurrection or a divine Jesus, but I know a major complaint/criticism of Mormon church meetings is they don't focus enough on Jesus. So for those who believe or are at least inspired by the story of the resurrection, what ...

Re: Nelson's Christmas devotional talk was disgusting

For Lydia, meeting President Nelson and attending the devotional was literally a wish fulfilled. “It is so amazing just to know the prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” she said after the devotional. “It was probably the greatest experience of my life.” During his address, P...

Re: Ministering Secretary

It’s failing spectacularly in our ward. Our RS and EQP are constantly sending out pleas to “don’t forget to minister!” And they sent someone to our door last week to talk to us about it-i wonder if that was their calling!? We just smiled and nodded. Even my TBM DH. He’s not doing his either. Same f...

Nelson's Christmas devotional talk was disgusting

I can't get over how disturbing and nauseating it was for Nelson to exploit a young girl's cancer to build up his own charisma and persona. "Lydia's wish was to meet the president of the Lord's church." No, her wish was to know what heaven is like. Her wish was probably that the so-called prophet of...

But still - I can not get over the coincidences of it all, so I'm feeling like I should go to church tomorrow to participate in F&T about the impossibility of it all and how I know I am on the right path.  Please do it! Your mic would likely be turned off as soon as they realized it wasn...

Any good resources on Deutero Isaiah?

I'm teaching gospel doctrine tomorrow and it covers Isaiah 54-56 and 63-65, which are part of duetero (or possibly trito) Isaiah. I'd like to gently introduce the idea of multiple authorship to the class, maybe just talk about how Isaiah covers different time periods and can be divided up accordingl...

I still maintain that garments are the single dumbest idea Smith ever had. I can't wrap my mind around how anyone takes them seriously, including myself a few years ago.

Is it wrong to put the finishing touches on your sunday school lesson with a Venti Americano in one hand? I've been doing this for over a year and they haven't kicked me out yet. It's almost as if, despite the rhetoric of "worthiness" and keeping all the commandments just right, they don't really k...

NOM or hypocrite?

This morning I had a homemade mocha as I was finishing my Sunday school lesson, then went to church and gave my lesson. The lesson got a typical positive response, despite the fact that I focused on the humanist elements and avoided any kind of supernatural discussion of God or Jesus (I consider mys...

Re: Evolving temple experience

I too was roped into attending an endowment session this past week, for the first time in nearly three years. I've reached the stage where I can participate in churchy things mostly with feelings of utter apathy and indifference rather than anger, for the sake of DW. So I went in expecting nothing a...

Re: In which I lose my best friend

I am sorry to hear this, whatififly. As Not Buying It said, many friendships in life are not based on a two-way, personal relationship, but a three-way relationship between the two friends and a third-party institution or community. This happens not only in the church, but in pretty much any communi...
