Re: The Covenant Hand?

Of all the pearls of wisdom you could have given a group of impressionable youth, and this is the best you've got? I think this goes beyond the opportunity cost of giving youth instruction that could benefit their lives. Oaks didn't just pass on an opportunity to pass on a pearl of wisdom, he took ...

I don't think there's a way to know for absolute certain what really happened but from the narrative in that essay: Angry investors in the society and local antagonists circulated many rumors attacking Joseph, including allegations that he commi...

Re: New Gospel Topics Essay - BOM Geography

Back in September of last year, when Cook was accompanied by Kate Holbrook and Matt Grow during some fireside or other at Nauvoo,I remember hearing a reference to 116 (no lie, 116, like pages that were lost or something) "topics" that weren't a part of the Saints book but would be available for refe...

Girls between the ages of 11 and 18 can pass the sacrament. However they still will not be allowed to bless it. I’ve heard some wards have the YW pass sacrament to the nursing mothers lounge. I can see this as a potential change. I came across a post elsewhere that was about blessing the sacrament....

Re: Another devotional aimed at keeping believers from looking behind the curtain - this time @ BYU

I saw this article pop up in my social media feed. I got the distinct impression that Corbridge conflates the Spirit with confirmation bias. In the end, the article becomes another thing that feeds people's appeal to authority. Corbridge looked into it. Corbridge is spiritual and a GA. Corbridge's f...

Re: Text from Bishop

If I remember correctly, you asked for a break. This is your bishop testing that boundary you established. A polite, "No thanks." is in order. You could even sugar coat it to help the medicine go down, "Thanks for thinking about me, but I'm not interested in taking on any assignments right now." May...

Re: Ward Conference is now a Dystopian Future

Finally we got to endure a thick helping of pre-guilting members over not using their extra free hour from 2-hour church properly. Apparently it is not to be used for football watching or sleeping. I expect these guilting talks will fade away as 2-hour church becomes the new normal, but for now it ...

Re: Missionary name badges

I've seen a few older couples that have specific stake callings wear name badges to church on Sunday but I see far more RMs that have their mission name badges attached to their scriptures or something... and they've been home for over a decade.

Is it time for the Church to get realistic about it's membership numbers?
SM attendance is a number every unit submits in a quarterly report. Someone has their finger right on the pulse of the trends in actual membership.

I'm also thinking that we're leading up to a change to the WoW. I'm not chomping at the bit to drink tea or coffee, if they are taken off the list I'll in all likelihood continue to not drink them. That's my disclaimer stating I don't have skin in the game. But banning coffee and tea really makes us...

Re: The long rumored temple changes are happening now?

Church statement on temple changes: "Whenever the Lord has had a people on the earth who will obey His word, they have been commanded to build temples." The temple in Jerusalem was destroyed by Rome in 70 a.d. I wonder why the existing Christian church wasn't commanded to build another, smaller tem...

I'm likely remembering wrong but I half remember hearing that some kids going out on missions were reporting directly to the field. They didn't go a MTC.

Anyone else hear something similar?

I think if you resigned there'd be a greater chance of well meaning members showing up in an effort to get you to rejoin. If you are ex'ed then people would probably try to avoid you.

Re: Home study church

I don’t like using the word lazy because it has so many negative connotations, but I’ve come to the conclusion maybe being lazy isn’t always a bad thing. With as much that is expected of members of the church there's probably a way to label everyone as "lazy." I know that when I was more orthodox I...
