Re: What's Helping Me Today

This photo fills me with awe - it makes me feel really small in a way that I like. When I'm the biggest thing in my universe, my problems feel like they're the most important thing in the universe. They don't go away when I look at this image and try to comprehend my actual size and importance, but...

What's Helping Me Today

I listened to a podcast with Philip Roth (from before he died), discussing his novel The Plot Against America. He read this great passage from it, talking about what it's like to live through historical events: . . . the unfolding of the unforeseen was everything. Turned wrong way round, the relentl...

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?

For perspective: Over the past month about 40 US citizens died from COVID-19. In that same period about 4000 US citizens committed suicide and 3300 died in traffic accidents (based on recent statistics). Perspective is so valuable and I appreciate your sharing those stats, Hagoth. Of course COVID-1...

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?

My prediction. Conference will be conducted without a live audience and at least one of the speakers will declare that the Lord created TV and the internet just for this reason. Miracles! You nailed it. https://www.deseret.com/faith/2020/3/11/21174868/general-conference-coronavirus-april-2020-mormo...

Re: Whistle Blower Files IRS Complaint

Also wonder how their annual accounting report in conference will change. I was fantasizing about taking a group of NOMs and exmos to the Conference Center to loudly boo and heckle when the auditor gives his report next April and then . . . I realized that if they're smart (not a given) they will o...

Re: Talking around the issues

I attended SM yesterday with my family (one of a couple of times a year when I still go). It was interesting that when one of the bishopric made his closing comments after the Christmas program, he spent some time addressing his gratitude for being able to come to a place where he felt supported and...

Re: NOM: Thank you for the low-level bitterness

The title is not ironic. Seriously, thank you. A few months ago, I tried the "avoiding all things Mormon" experiment. It seemed to make me happier at first, but ultimately seems to have failed. I don't know that the experiment was solely responsible for my declining mental health, but I think it wa...

Re: Bras

Ladies, how many bras does the average woman have/need? You know, no matter how often women complain on NOM about “some man asking us about our underwear” it just never seems to get through to the men  Seriously. . . .Why do you want to know something about women’s underwear? Yeah . . . my fir...

Re: Church Renews Opposition to ERA

. . . I would really like to see our society do the right thing by way of integrity, good principle and rational thinking rather than having to codify good behavior. As I recall the intent of the Founders was to restrict the government in it's ability to interfere in our lives. The more we codify, ...

Re: Church Renews Opposition to ERA

I was aware through the time period of what was happening but didn't really study all of the legal ramifications. I wasn't sure why the church was so opposed to the amendment. Still on the other hand, what struck me as critical was that the entire thing seemed redundant. I think everything that wom...

Re: book recommendation for Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church

Sam Harris interviewed her in October about the book. https://samharris.org/podcasts/171-escaping-christian-cult/ I listened to this -- thank you for the link. Although a lot of their discussion was covered in the book, Sam asks her specifically how to engage someone mired in extremist thinking wit...

Re: What are you drinking right now?

I'm going to be sipping tea all day long while I try out my new mini teapot. It's only 165 ml if you fill it to the brim (more accurate capacity is more like 150 ml). My wife might joke about a grown man having his own tea party with a mini-teapot but you know what? I'm secure in my masculinity tha...

Re: It's been a while. What next

I may be the minority on this, but I still see no reason extended family needs to be told. What business is it of theirs, really, what underwear I wear? Or even what god I worship or don't? Or what I do on Sunday mornings? (It's a lot more fun than what we used to do.) . . . Defining boundaries is ...

Re: book recommendation for Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church

Did she leave Christianity as well or just the church? I don't think she comes right out and says either way. She does talk about visiting services for other denominations after she's left Westboro, and how she saw all the flaws in their arguments for their belief. She does quote a lot of scripture...

book recommendation for Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church

I read this over the holiday weekend . . . WOW. The author is the granddaughter of the church's founder. She was fully devout and for many years she was the Church's social media manager. The book describes her childhood (a lot of it is very hard to read because of the extreme, hateful positions of ...

Re: A note from Kishkumen. (His daughter is sick)

I'm so, so sorry you and your family are going through this. Words are inadequate I know, but I hope you have people around you IRL who can bear you up and give you the kind of support that actually comforts and helps.

Hugs.
