Re: DW is taking the challenge to read BoM

Love the replies. Just wanted to update. Wife was reading tonight, I sat next to her watching TV. She finishes reading, puts her BoM away, looks over at me and says: "I'm sorry, it's just too boring". I replied: "No need to be sorry, it really is boring" I asked her how her list of thin...

Re: The name change reminds me of why i left

The first rule of fight club is to not talk about fight club. The first rule of the mormon church is to not talk bad about the mormon church. Even in examples like this, where clearly Russell Marion Nelson, Senior is throwing past prophets under the bus, mormons will not acknowledge that is what he ...

Re: Fascinating Conversation with my Wife

Great stuff, HIPS. It sounds like your wife and mine are moving in similar directions, except that Mrs. Hagoth has reached a point where she wouldn't consider a calling like RSP. Sam Young and the Joseph Bishop situation have really opened her eyes to the fact that the church is a corporation that ...

Re: Fascinating Conversation with my Wife

Congrats. A milestone for sure. I get her approach. As a privileged person in every way I have taken that approach. I recognize that many dont have the same privilege and cannot make it work. I would prefer to make a change. I hope to do that once DW is completely on the same page. We are getting t...

Re: Fascinating Conversation with my Wife

You have a great family HIPS. I'm happy that your wife is putting you first. My wife still thinks it's all true because once in a while she'll hear a tear jerker story from a TBM so it must be true, right? Although my DW stll believes, lately she'd rather sleep in on second Saturday and even remind...

Fascinating Conversation with my Wife

My wife and I were hiking early on Saturday morning and the topic of our family and religion came up. And just to remind everyone, I am almost 9 years into the journey and now 9 of 12 of the HIPS family are out. That includes the daughter and son in law and 3 grandkids. Here are the highlights from ...

Re: It's official: Sam Young is excommunicated

What cluster F for the church. I know most mormons won't bat an eye. But the optics of excommunicating someone who was calling out bishops asking sexually explicit questions is truly bizarre. They will try and spin it about going against the church. But what was he against again? Oh yeah. Stopping s...

Re: BoM Translation: Scholarly or Revelatory

The church's attempt at a strong argument about the BOM hinges upon their attempt to prove that Joseph could NOT have written the BOM. 1) He wasn't educated. 2) He didn't have time. 3) He had no source materials. 4) He couldn't write a coherent letter. 5) The BOM is so complex. They are strongly arg...

Re: Polygamy and the afterife

Most mormons don't want to believe that polygamy is necessary for their salvation. Even as TBM's my wife and I would always joke, that if God asked, we would say no. As a TBM I would latch on to any statement to help justify my lack of belief in polygamy. But its hard to ignore things like this: The...

The message was that BECAUSE they were on their mission none of their family left the church or got divorced. BECAUSE they were on their mission, two of their grandchildren were just missed by a car that certainly would have hit and killed them without the added blessing of grandparents on a missio...

Re: Doctrine that is disavowed but still believed-on a scale 1-10

You have to earn your way into heaven. I think 9/10 mormons still believe this. The church has tried to soften its tone and seem like they actually believe in the atonement. But in reality, mormons have been taught so hard that christians are wrong because they believe they don't have to do anything...

Re: From Apostate to the HC

That is definitely a fascinating story. I actually think HC is a position that could be fulfilled as a NOM. Yes. You have to speak on a regular basis, but what you actually say is up to you and you are not give a word for word script. As a member of the HC you are actually in a service role and not ...

Re: Wine, coffee and tea

Just an FYI: There's been a bit of pushback from the scientific/research community on that recent article. Yes there are some compelling arguments as to why the study isn't nearly as accurate as has been reported, but the headlines were *everywhere* and I saw that article on many TBM twitter accoun...

Thank you. I am very grateful to have not lost my most precious relationship to the dishonesty of the church.

Re: A tale of two days

This gives me some hope... Definitely take hope. My mantra through all of this has been this: "I love my wife more than I hate the church." I have found that the more I have given to her the more she has given back to me. In the early days, when I was demanding to be acknowledged, all I was doing w...

A tale of two days

"I liked that man more than I like this man." Those were the words my wife spoke to me while were were arguing at 30,000 feet on a plane flying from Romania to Paris a little over 6 years ago. We were arguing over the fact that I hadn't worn my garment top while touring around Romania and our younge...

I wasn't going to reply but for some reason I couldn't stop myself. I tried to read this quite a while ago and got stuck in the idea of it all. Re: My list/summary of why the church can't be true... (29 and growing)

Or put another way - no one that is TBM will ever accept that the BoM is not true without a shock to the system. So this list is designed to say "Here are 30 pieces of the puzzle, and here are why the apologetics just do not work for those issues. Put together, there is no way this can hold up to a...

Re: My list/summary of why the church can't be true... (29 and growing)

Great list and great discussion. This should be a keeper for all NOMs. As for me, I am now just sticking with two issues, if any mormons actually care to have a conversation. 1) The Book of Mormon isn't true. 2) See number 1. And I don't even go into anachronisms, plagiarisms, fake histories, etc. I...
