Re: Gospel of Mark vs. Gospel of Luke

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/7630730-atonement-theology-is-not-the-pathway-to-life-the-ability is the source of this quote. I've read the book and I like it. It is perhaps a fringe view that sees the gospels as parallel to the the Jewish liturgical calendar. I think it gives a more early Christ...

Gospel of Mark vs. Gospel of Luke

This popped up for me when we were talking about how the LDS church approaches repentance which I imagine most of us agree is seriously flawed and problematic. I thought about the atonement and how we generally view it as Jesus paying the price for our sins with his death. From what I understand fro...

Re: TBMs who turn to" Real Christianity"

It would be interesting to see what percentage of LDS after a faith transition land in another Christian tradition. FWIW, my wife still considers herself a Christian and appreciates communal worship but it has been difficult for her to attend elsewhere since her faith transition. I myself have stron...

Re: Plagiarism at GC?

He was the President of BYU-ID. One would think that him and his helpers would know better than to plagiarize a sermon. Certainly there are kids kicked out of BYU and other universities for such egregious behaviors. It's interesting how when one is an apostle, you get a pass, and others are just fau...

Re: What’s wrong with the cross?

I just have to say the logic or reasoning that the church doesn't embrace wearing crosses is because we don't focus on Christ's death is unbelievably faulty and nonsensical. What do we do almost every freakin' Sunday!? We literally sing hymns and partake of emblems of his death!!!!! I mean really?!...

Re: What’s wrong with the cross?

This is so stupid! Yes, DOM began to push back on the cross due to him and others at that time freaking out that the Catholics were coming to Utah to strengthen their own Catholic membership in the state and they were worried that they would evangelize us Mormons! Hahahaha!!!!! Oh, the irony!!! So h...

Re: Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?

Thanks for all your supportive comments and sharing your stories. Very helpful and so appreciated. I'm listening to another episode of Mormons on Mushrooms and the guest is talking about how even the concept in the LDS church of "being unworthy or worthy" is so damaging. Having a leader (always a m...

Re: Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?

[But now my wife is out and it looks like all of our children are out. Reading this puts a smile on my face. I hope therapy brings the healing and personal growth you and your family needs. It’s a shame that getting out even causes heartache and anxiety. That’s when you know you were raised in a sy...

Re: Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?

My mission was traumatic. I had nightmares about having to go back for years. My mom had to have everything be happy and have a silver lining which shaped my entire self and life. I have a lot of trauma from my mission as well. I came home early twice! First time for physical health problems. Once ...

Re: Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?

It's a weird thought because believing members often laugh at this idea but it is absolutely true that people who leave experience trauma from so many areas not just of being in the church but leaving it. This is so true. Trauma in the church and then the trauma of leaving. So true. We are totally ...

Re: Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?

I would suggest we’ve all been traumatized by religion in general and not perhaps just because we were raised Mormon. How is your therapist helping you? Curious to understand their approach and ways to overcome these thoughts. I think I need to see a therapist. I still have anger and anxiety issues...

Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?

I'm listening to the Mormons on Mushrooms podcast today and LHP is on as a guest discussing Mormon identity and intergenerational trauma. With both my wife and myself stepping away from church I am seeing more and more how this trauma has perpetuated through the generations and was woven into the be...

Re: "Opportunity to receive personal revelation"

What a complete joke. I remember the push back (and perhaps I even perpetuated this myself) that the reason we hear the same stuff over and over and over again is that it's really our fault. We are not sufficiently prepared or worthy, or righteous enough as a people for anything new because we are n...

Re: "Noteworthy" loses director to new policy.

https://byumusicgroup.byu.edu/noteworthy/ Unfortunately, the official site of "Noteworthy" while announcing a new director offers no thanks for the services of past director Scott Shattuck. Apparently, Shattuck chose to let his temple recommend lapse, and says he has no plans to renew it. Super sad...

Re: Oaks vows BYU will not be part of "the World"

I know 2 BYU professors who were terminated in the last couple of weeks, both were getting ready to teach their classes when they were called in. I know one very well and the other just a little bit. I can't get into specifics, but what is clear to me is that they are cleaning house of any prof's w...

Re: Demythologizing Mormonism

I think it's probably a good move for the church to pivot away from church history and living prophets. They can't do it completely obviously but it is much easier to debunk miracles over the past 200 years rather than 2000 years ago. The problem is that at the same time they are toning down the hi...

Re: What did Jesus have to say about...

My POV about Jesus for what it's worth is that his movement was a peaceful movement otherwise Pilate would have slaughtered his followers and hunted them down at the time of the crucifixion and also afterwards. That's a great point. The gospel writers were obviously kissing up to the Romans by maki...

Re: Demythologizing Mormonism

I think this is an ongoing strategic move by the church. Focus on Jesus because he is much easier to deal with than Joseph Smith and Church History. This is one of the reasons why the church has had so many problems--it emphasized church history way too much and it is way too problematic. They doubl...
