Re: Hurt and angry

I'm sorry for your pain. I've been there. I'm still there to some degree. What's helped me to let a lot of it go is to realize that without the church my life would be unrecognizable. I regularly have to remind myself that all of my experiences, good and bad, made me who I am today. I would be an en...

Re: I still love you.

Considering they're trying to express love (however imperfectly), I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. One possible meaning behind it is they've heard stories of loved ones of nonbelievers withholding love and they're trying to make it clear, "We're not going to let you go!"

Re: What was your first crack

My first crack that lead directly to my multi-year faith crisis was some combination of what I learned reading Rough Stone Rolling and learning about the Book of Abraham problem (thanks BCC!). However, as I've reflected on my whole life I can identify cracks along the way that helped prepare me for ...

Re: And two steps back...

Thanks for the all the good thoughts! I can't reply over weekends so sorry for the delayed responses! Also, she needs to acknowledge that you are an independent person, because her statement that she can't "change her standards and let you do whatever you want..." seems to indicate some kind of owne...

And two steps back...

Or maybe more like ten. I’ve been discussing my faith transition with my wife since General Conference weekend. She’s said some surprisingly hopeful things like, “It will all work out.” and “I can see us together for a lifetime even if you’re a nonbeliever.” And then we come to our conversation last...

Re: The ONLY topic of Mormon talks

"... To think otherwise, without immediate repentance, may cost one his faith, may destroy his testimony..." Bingo! When called on the carpet by a local Salt Lake minister regarding the above, George Albert Smith stood on his head to assure him that the message was a fluke that had been accidently ...

Re: Round 2 Beginning

I described how I told them in this post , but the short version is I was a little too obvious in a discussion about how the church treats gays, and my sister asked if I believe in the church and I responded honestly. This was followed the next day by phone calls to the 2 siblings who weren't there...

Re: Irritating mission attitudes

This was a painful quote to see on my Facebook feed. I'm a dude but I left my mission early (by choice) and I spent years feeling "inadequate or left out or undignified or tarnished." I'm in my mid-30s and I only let go of most of the pain a within the past five years or so. At least a decade of fee...

Re: Round 2 Beginning

I'm possibly on the cusp of such a step myself, so I'm curious how you approached it to get a positive initial reaction. If you don't mind sharing, that is! As for writing out all your beliefs, I've considered the same but I've wondered how productive it would be to blast that out to everyone unsoli...

Re: Satan

No, a literal Satan went out the window with a literal God. I remember Zilpha on Mormon Expression saying years ago that she actually lost a belief in Satan first and then reasoned her way to losing faith in God. From one of my all-time favorite books (see my avatar): There were people who called th...

I love hearing about these connections. As much as I appreciate and value online communities like this one, It's one of my hopes that I can also find folks in real life that "get" me and my journey.

I figured it out, why can't you?

I posted in another thread seeking advice (and appreciate everyone who shared their thoughts there!). This is just pure venting. My faith crisis lasted several years. I agonized every day for hours. I searched, I pondered, I prayed, I begged for answers. I wanted it all to be true so badly. I needed...

Re: The rescue is on!

Thank you all for taking the time to respond! Oddly enough, I’ve been the one to bring up reading the Book of Mormon the past couple nights and she’s been the one with an excuse not to do it… Advice worth what was paid for it... Nice level-headed thoughts. Wait and see. I’ll probably focus on the Bo...

The rescue is on!

Last weekend, I finally came clean with my wife about my total lack of belief. She’s had an idea about my issues with the church for quite some time. A few years ago, she asked me to fake it and so I’ve been doing so since then. However, this latest discussion has finally convinced her that this isn...

Re: The 2nd Coming, why is it hardly mentioned anymore?

I think it's a cyclical thing. It's harped on for years and then I think everyone gets a little embarrassed when it's clear it ain't coming, so people stop talking about it for a while. But given enough time, it will get play again like it has for 2000 years. It's just such a good tool for scaring f...
