Re: new narrative

I just don't see it doing anything to stop the bleeding. If you try to reinvent the church in order to account for the historical problems, you basically concede that the early leaders can't stand on their own which makes their stance as the one true church that much weaker. It will give current dou...

Re: Sam Young: Hunger Strike Begins Tomorrow

Once again the church releases a statement to inoculate the members instead of addressing the problem at hand. Not surprising at all, and as I said earlier I think they're taking the very calculated gamble that most members won't know who Sam Young is or the abundance of work he's done to bring this...

Re: Literalness of the global flood/Noah's Ark

The interesting part of this discussion is that as I'm reading about it online, a lot of it is obviously from non-Mormons. So you have people moving the goalposts to say 'maybe the flood was *earlier* than thought and that these civilizations were actually later than thought.' So basically the only ...

Re: Facts about Con artists

This reminds me of the current political climate so much... which has made me really hate Joseph Smith for taking advantage of the same climate in his time.

Literalness of the global flood/Noah's Ark

I was listening to a bunch of Infants on Thrones (IoT) this week while working outside, and as an early aside I highly recommend their 5 part series going over the 'Seven Deadly Heresies' talk that just wrapped up. Anyway - it got me thinking about the literal necessity of the church for both the gl...

Re: Bill Reel Gets Ultimatum from Stake President

I wanted my Bishop and SP to know it wasn't up to them to decide. Nothing they could say or do could convince me to stay. You're not excommunicating me....I'm excommunicating you. The truth is that very few of us will have the option of being called in for a court unless we are as visible as someon...

Re: Is Sam Young going to chain himself to the Temple?

He has now posted his intentions. He will invite each of the 15 to show up for an interview that will be live streamed. They will speak with adults who have been impacted by the invasive questions with mormon youth. There is no way in the world the Q15 will show. Not a chance in the world that any ...

Re: Bill Reel Gets Ultimatum from Stake President

I am almost positive that John Dehlin mentioned that they did have him either sign or promise not to record, and he honored that because he didn't want them to be able to turn the tables on him from the publicity that surrounded his excommunication. So I guess Bill could either refuse to sign it, te...

Re: Bill Reel Gets Ultimatum from Stake President

Bill will not resign. Nor will he be told what he can say or how he can say it. This is headed for the gunfight at the OK Corral. Good for him - I am looking forward to watching this unfold... how many people can they silence until they realize the problem is the church and not the people pointing ...

What recent event forced the Stake President's hand? Was it something that Bill recently had on his website or was it an ultimatum from HQ or both? Is Bill holding up okay?
Whatever he did, I hope he can let us know. I'd love the excommunication badge.

Re: Who wants to play a guessing game?

The comments on that thread are so beyond cringeworthy. I got through two pages and I had to stop... it's scary to think what church members would do if a general authority said they needed to.

Re: Bill Reel Gets Ultimatum from Stake President

Just guessing from Bill's more recent podcasts that he's going to make the church take the action, which is good for him. The most examples that we have of the church trying to snuff out opposition, the more it exposes them to their extreme fear of the truth.

Re: Who wants to play a guessing game?

I feel like we are playing family feud... Richard Dawson: "NOM family! We asked one hundred Mormons to fill in the blank in the following statement - 'BLANK is unchaste, disrespectful, and irreverent. It darkens the divine affections with which we are endowed.'" *pauses for effect* , "We are lookin...

I am so confused. Would guess birth control, polygamy, or maybe something like sex practices beyond the most basic sex?

But really it could be anything... clearly this is a go-to response for difficult issues.

Re: The worst (least inspired) decisions by Church leaders

Achilles list included most items that came to my mind in this subject, although I can think of one more that will eventually bite the Church in the behind on a gradually increasing basis. That is the insistence that the LDS Church is either all true or all false . This is especially short-sighted ...

Re: The worst (least inspired) decisions by Church leaders

It's hard to do a top ten list that has the theme of 'least inspired' decisions since I assume none of them were truly inspired, so to me it would just be a list of the worst decisions overall... I guess for those I'd put them in no particular order: Torching the Nauvoo Expositor: JS knew the whole ...

Re: General Conference Death March

Listened yesterday while working -- great podcast. I think that's a very underrated criticism of the church. There are no miracles, even with the priesthood supposedly being restored. Combine that with almost every key faith promoting story being proven false with time... what is left? This is a chu...
