Re: Mormon and Gay
Now to the problematic part of the message. The Church expects gays and lesbians to remain single and celibate. I actually agree with a Law of Chastity that calls for celibacy before marriage and monogamy after. I just don't agree that gays and lesbians should not be allowed to marry. Lifetime sing...

Re: Mormon and Gay
I feel about this website as I felt about the "diversity videos" they just released. The rhetoric is truly wonderful, and I'm actually sincere about that; the problem is that these beliefs are not even close to being put into practice, and there is a legacy of non-diversity that the church needs to...

Re: Tithing
A huge part of my faith transition was realizing that the church is not, and has nothing to do with, God. But the message of the church is that it IS God. It is a church where we worship the church. Just listen to conference; you are constantly told how to serve God, but the underlying message is al...

Re: Introducing our new moderators
High praises to Red Ryder and Corsair for making all of this happen. I don't know the first thing about moderating but as far as I'm concerned it should be about as intrusive as feather dusting. I doubt any significant moderation will be required outside of lowering the expectations of the odd troub...

Re: Was JS the only person who claimed to use seer stones?
I think for Pres. Uchtdorf's analogy to be viable I would have to be able to make a phone call to him from a rock that I found in a well.
If I did make such a call do you think he would believe that I was calling him from a rock?

Re: Was JS the only person who claimed to use seer stones?
From Quinn's Early Mormonism and the Magic World View : A popular tradition in English folk magic was that Adam, Abraham and other Old Testament patriarchs also possessed "Angellical Stones." Writers insisted that modern people could also obtain such a stone that provides " Apparition of Angells, an...

Hagoth was my username on the FARMS website. I just kept it when I changed teams. One of my hobbies is boat building. I created my avatar as a sort of political cartoon jab at BoM apologetics.

Re: Recipes for Spam
The LDS correlation department certainly tries to drive out the most revolutionary ideas. Hagoth's Spam Jello Recipe: 1) prepare 1 packet of extra-bland unflavored Jello following the instructions on the box 2) add copious amounts of diced Spam 3) cool until gelled 4) cut into single portions 5) at...

Re: 3rd Nephi takeaway
It truly is hard to believe that Jesus of the New Testement would be killing CHILDREN! What did they do? Surely if some wicked people had to die god could have sent a virus that only infected the wicked adults and spared the children. Especially when he just left the cross after begging his father ...

Re: Recipes for Spam
If you don't like the taste of Spam, sandwiching it between two slices of apologetic toast with a thick smear of nuance can make it palatable to someone who otherwise might not be able to stomach it. But more importantly, if everyone else is gobbling it up and raving about how delicious it is, you'r...

Re: Gob Doesn’t Love Me and Earth is an Insignificant Ball Travelling through Cold, Dark Space
I am always quick to defend the word "agnostic." It's a great word and it applies to every one of us. No matter how much personal conviction a person has that their particular version God exists they still can't really know for certain. We are all agnostics of one form or another, and we are certain...

3rd Nephi takeaway
If you still attend some or all of your Sunday school classes (my first time back in 5 or 6 weeks) you probably heard a lesson today about Jesus' visit to the New World. I have always felt that portions of 3rd Nephi are among the most touching scripture ever written, but at the same time it has some...

Here's an interesting video of side-by-side comments about what church leadership tells the outside world, compared to what goes on behind closed doors:
