Church History Topics
Has anyone seen this on the Church website or Gospel Library app? https://www.lds.org/languages/eng/content/history/topics/martin-harriss-consultations-with-scholars?lang=eng. If you look on the left, there are all the topics. A lot of them appear to be a direct response to Mormon Think. It's intere...

Re: Stone of a Greenish Caste . . .
I'll have to check out that book. To me, there just seem to be too many people who saw some kind of physical object covered and quite a few people who handled something to have not been anything resembling plates. I think Dan Vogel makes a compelling case that they were made of tin and Joseph disloc...

Stone of a Greenish Caste . . .
I'm curious on your theories about the golden plates. There is one quote that seems very credible and seems to throw a curve ball in a lot of theories: Josiah Stowell 7 Nov, 1832 Josiah Stowel, being by me sworn, saith... that Smith, the prisoner, went in the night, and brought the Bible, (as Smith ...

Re: The Lucy Code
Interesting theory, I enjoyed watching it. I think that Joseph memorizing pages and using the rock/hat for a dramatic delivery is very likely. I think it's interesting how closely Joseph and Hyrum worked together on everything, very likely that he contributed. I also think one of the most interestin...

1830 Interview with Joseph Smith Senior
I was listening to a podcast on LDS Perspectives with Don Bradley about the 116 pages. Much of what he discussed was from an 1830 interview (published in 1870) with JS Senior. I looked it up and was blown away. Very interesting magical view of the coming forth of the BOM and the BOM story. This may ...

Re: Garments Question
I've asked this question to a few people, one person (a temple worker) asked the Temple President. Some believers were honest and said it's not a covenant but the Church was concerned that people weren't wearing their garments all the time and put it in there (which I think is honest) and others tri...

Garments Question
So the temple recommend interview question is: "Do you wear the garment both night and day as instructed in the endowment and in accordance with the covenant you made in the temple?" Why do you think this is asked? I can't think of any place in the endowment when you covenant to wear the garment. Yo...

Re: To tell or not to tell
I really feel for people who work for the Church and/or BYU. Their religious observance and ideology is tied to their paycheck and support for their families. There is a built-in incentive for people to do whatever they can to maintain a TR and not rock the boat. I think your gut instinct is right, ...

Re: Reasons for not criticizing church leaders
One of the central messages of Jesus was that he disrupted the status quo, both as a critic of Judaism and challenging the authority of the Roman empire. His message was so outrageous that he was put to death for it. We often portray Jesus as the obedient son who was the one person who got a 100% on...

Take this free online course from Yale https://oyc.yale.edu/religious-studies/rlst-145. It covers all of the main points of modern biblical scholarship. I really enjoyed it.

Re: Higher Historical Criticism and Mormon Doctrine
Thank you for sharing. This has been a major part of my faith journey. Yale does an amazing free online course called introduction to Hebrew Bible where they cover a lot of this material through a series of lectures. For me, this leaves room for a different kind of faith and clears up some major iss...

Re: Who is Grant Palmer talking about?
I have spent way too much time thinking and researching this. From what Grant Palmer said, this man is an emeritus GA who was called when Kimball was Pres. of the Church. Look through the list of emeritus GAs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_general_authorities_of_The_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_...
