Re: Supporting our own
Jfro, I love your Mormon stories episodes!!! I used to read your posts on NOM in Charlie Kelly's voice in my head. But now that I know what your real voice sounds like I read your posts in your voice. Thanks for all the hard work you've put into those episodes. They've helped me see things I ...

Re: Supporting our own
Jfro18, I have really liked your work on Mormon stories. What is the best way to support you? Donate to Mormon stories or elsewhere? So I'm not making any $$ for these (I know John pays regulars but I want to make sure no one can ever say I'm doing this for the money) which is probably a really dum...

Re: You're only happy because Satan won
The biggest realization to me is how much more powerful "Satan" is than "God." If I had someone trying to lure my kid away with weird tactics i'd put a stop to it, yet God is like "yeah that child is gonna pay for eternity because he didn't believe my prophets who were clearly wrong all the time." W...

Re: The Brighamite God.
I agree with all of this so much - the version of God in Mormonism is just so different than the God that is portrayed at General Conference and reading Joseph Smith's claimed revelations from this version of God is such a giant red flag that either Joseph Smith made it up with the Mormon God kind o...

Wow... that's really stunning and makes perfect sense. Revelation seems to come from social and legal issues in these latter days, doesn't it?

Re: What to Say to Son
I don't quite know what to add here because ultimately you'll know the best way to talk to your son with an approach that works for your family. Ultimately some people will respond to discussions about confirmation bias and all that, but you also have to make sure your wife is OK with you going into...

Re: Supporting our own
Which is a real challenge, because just learning those things on your own sorta makes you feel that way, regardless of who it's coming from. That's why so many people dip a toe in and then run away because they think they feel "Satan" (aka Captain CogDis, aka your own critical faculty) mocking them...

Re: Where is the Primitive Christianity?
We are also taught that the BoM contains the fullness of the gospel. But it contains nothing that is uniquely Mormon, right? Doesn't that mean someone who is living the fullness of the gospel can ignore anything restored by Joseph Smith, or taught by his successors? If the BoM contains the fullness...

Just wanted to pass along a happy message. Syster Ryder has been listening to your podcast series. She’s 5 episodes in and said she enjoys the “just the facts” tone. No anger or biased side taking. Just presenting the information in a good solid information sharing tone. That's the best compliment ...

Re: Should I tell her ?
My personal experience is that going to someone with a deeply held belief and saying "I've found out this belief is not true and here is why" never ends well at least in the short/middle term. So I don't have any real advice here beyond saying that I'd follow Linked's advice and just maybe talk to h...

This is so over the top - like I get that their goal is to be faith promoting but the questions are just absurd.
How could anyone read the questions they list and believe they came from someone with doubts?

Re: Best evidence that Joseph Smith was just making it all up
That's a great insight Hagoth. Mormon (Joseph) claiming that "there is way more of Jesus' teachings but you just have to trust me" is doing the same work as "I had an experience too sacred to share" in a testimony. And that's a great insight as well Linked. There are a few "best evidences" to me bu...

Thats it. And it apparently shows up in one of the newspapers of the day, but the source is likewise not entirely credible. Are there no GenCon rumor this time around?
It seems like in the weeks leading up to GenCon every six months there are all sorts of rumors coming out, but either I'm out of the loop or there has just been nothing this time around. I tend to have this belief that Nelson was pushing through everything he wanted to do quickly to cement his legac...

Re: Were we all traumatized by being Mormon?
I think everyone is to some degree and I've definitely realized it more and more as I've separated from it because it did shape so many aspects of our lives. The areas that people feel it definitely differ and of course the situation you are in will amplify certain aspects - I say that thinking of b...

"If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own live also, he cannot be my disciple." This is truly stunning given that members of the church will often call themselves disciples of Christ. ETA: What is the apologetic ...

Re: Joseph Smith and the curse of the flaming sword
The overwhelmingly obvious weakness to this story, of course, is that the angel never appeared to the girls themselves. It' has the same legitimacy as a guy walking up to you in the street and saying, "the police said you have to give me all of your money or they will send me to the electric chair....
