Re: Lesson 2 "Behold I Am Jesus Christ
The most trouble I ever got into was about four years ago, just before the essays came out. The lesson was about Hyrum Page and his seer stone. I pointed out that Joseph had a seer stone too, and the teacher lost her cool. But we are still friends as long as I keep my mouth shut.

Re: Overriding Theme of Gospel Doctrine 2017
This is a great summary, Corsair. It points out that it many ways, LDS teachings are more fundamental and extreme than even Evangelical Christians.

Lesson 2 "Behold I Am Jesus Christ
Three things about the upcoming lesson. I have a teacher's manual I am referencing from. 1. The atonement is admittedly hard to comprehend, but the lesson points out: "Through the Atonement, the Savior gained perfect empathy for us in all our sorrows, pains, and afflictions." This makes sense to me,...

My step son heard about the "Revelations in Context" book, and my wife knew about it because I told her, but I don't expect Oliver's gift to be brought up in class. Maybe my wife will report to me if it does.

Re: Here is a real Prophecy, the Noah Sexton letter
I wish I had presented this last week, and it may sound snarky or like it would be considered an ambush, but why isn't Joseph Smith's letter of Jan. 4, 1833 to Noah Sexton (editor of the Rochester Observer) in the D&C? I thought of it when I read D&C 1:38. The last paragraph indicates to me that it...

Re: Gospel doctrine 2017
Because I'm an old man with too much time on my hands, I went over to the local distribution center and picked up a teacher's manual, "Revelations in Context" book, and student manual for $7.65. The teacher's manual seems very typical. The "Revelations in Context" has the discussion about Oliver Cow...

Re: So is magic officially part of the gospel now?
Another question......if the person who ordained you to the priesthood is unworthy do you really have the priesthood? What about people you ordain. This is one thing I think most Protestants get right. It's between you and God..... anyone who tries to intervene has an agenda.

Re: Gospel doctrine 2017
This thread is a great idea Emower. It will help us all fulfill our "calling" as NOMs. And Brent and others with GD teaching experience can help us figure out the most effective way to present our NOM points of view. It's time for us NOMs to unite and make Gospel Doctrine 2017 one hell of a year. :...

I will add that there are people in the church: ultra-TBM's who see people like Richard Bushman as subversive. http://wwwldsanswers.org/lds-scholars-...interview Do we really want to let them dominate the the average Gospel Doctrine class, in or out of the Mormon corridor?

Re: Gospel doctrine 2017
That is completely reasonable. I just worry about shining the light of truth in people's eyes instead of at their feet. Someone will at some time tell a whopper because they believe the whoppers. How do you deal with Sis Bluehair when she asks "Do you believe a 15 year old boy could have written th...

It's almost like the holy relics that cities laid claim to in the middle ages. There were multiple relics of single things. Google 'fake relics' or 'relic trade in the middle ages'. We Mormons have multiple Book of Mormon sites.

When I went over to lds.org there were no teacher's manual of the 2017 gospel doctrine courses available, just student manuals.

Re: Bible Archaeology
When you compare BOM and Bible archeology, it's like comparing a fart to a hurricane. (excuse the expression, it just popped into my head[I hope Mom isn't reading this :o ]) We can find the garden where Jesus prayed, but we can't find the city where hundreds of thousands of Nephites lived, or confir...

Re: A House Built on Sand
:D In my world view the "Rock" has to be "Truth". If God is Truth then God can be trusted completely. If God is not totally honest then whoever or whatever he is, he may be negotiated with or even admired, but he cannot truly and fully be worshipped. God may be the Rock of Truth but approaching, him...
