Re: A House Built on Sand

In my world view the "Rock" has to be "Truth". If God is Truth then God can be trusted completely. If God is not totally honest then whoever or whatever he is, he may be negotiated with or even admired, but he cannot truly and fully be worshipped.

Re: Biggest shelf item: biblical literalism

That was a very nice summary by FlackerMan. This made my day: http://wp.patheos.com.s3.amazonaws.com/blogs/exploringourmatrix/files/2013/12/Is-this-Bible-verse-a-metaphor.jpg The Poster is good........it could even be used in a Sunday school class if the sarcasm was removed. I'm reminded of Spencer...

Re: LDSanswers.org

I struggle with this - should we respect our sisters' and brothers' right to believe in nonsense, or do we challenge this kind of thinking when we see it? Is it more kind to just let them believe what they want to believe if they are happy with it? Or is it more kind to try and help them feel the f...

Re: Biggest shelf item: biblical literalism

That is a well presented you tube video. Sadly, virtually every TBM I know would be offended by it. They would be uncomfortable if they did watch it, and if I invite them to watch it, they would be uncomfortable with me. They are happy with the view that I am a pretty good guy who has gone off the d...

A church may or may not be the happiest place in town, but it should be the most honest.

What to get my wife for Christmas?

I know, it sounds like a lame post. I already have a couple of items, but I was looking for a book that might help us understand our faith differences better. My wife is already very understanding, so I'm OK, but is there a book anyone knows of that addresses faith differences in a marriage w...

Re: Emphasis on Obedience Clarified

When Joseph Smith drank a bottle of wine the night before he was martyred, was he being obedient? When Brigham Young ordered coffee to be in the list of items required for pioneers heading for Utah, was he being obedient? When Heber J. Grant told Lowery Nelson that the priesthood was doctrinally re...

Re: Emphasis on Obedience Clarified

Simplified version is clear as a bell. :D Ironically, obedience by itself is usually good, except in its extreme form. When I think of Athens and Sparta, and the contrasting mindsets, it seems the church has more of a Spartan mindset. Athens was more humanistic, Sparta was more militantly authoritar...

Re: Abinadi

Wow, you're right, this is blatantly trinitarian. There are some other goodies here too. Abinadi prooftexts Isaiah in the same incorrect way early Christians did and modern Christians continue to do, and he does it in King James wording. Abinadi's sermon also includes one of what I like to call "oo...

Moksha, you are a treasure! :) I'm a bit of a Spandex. I still want to talk about seer stones and the real church history in Gospel Doctrine class, when I go. I'm hoping next year's class will be more open, but I'm not holding my breathe.

Re: What is the priesthood anyway?

An anthropologist would explain priesthood as social stratification. Any society that amasses enough population will begin to form layers of social status, some of these are almost always likely to claim power over others because they have a special connection to god/gods/spirits. This becomes very...

Re: Would TBM's be better off if they weren't TBM's?

I have dealt with depression throughout my life. I think part of the problem was, I was trying to be something (a TBM) I wasn't. However, many of my friends seem to be TBM's naturally, it fits them like a glove. I did discover a surprising exception a week ago. A person I've known for 20 years as a ...

Much of the observed happiness is a facade I believe.

I always tried to put on a happy face while trying to force myself to be TBM. On the inside, I was dying.
Yeah, I see what you mean. Some, maybe many, could be faking it.

Re: Letter to my MIL

According to the time chart, it looks like Noah was either the Brother of Jared's father, or grandfather or possibly great grandfather, through Shem or possibly Japeth. In fact I would think that Jared would have known Noah and Shem quite well, since they lived long after the Jaredites took off for ...

Would TBM's be better off if they weren't TBM's?

I observe TBM's and they mostly seem happy. I once told a close TBM friend I thought she would be happier if they weren't TBM, but I might have been wrong.

Re: Joseph Smith the fortune teller

In my amateur study I learned two new words, exegesis and eisegesis. Exegesis is the process of trying to get the original meaning of a text. Eisegesis is trying to make the text fit with one's topic or predetermined meaning. I notice a lot of eisegesis in L.D.S. lesson manuals.

I sometimes picture heaven as a place where Martin Luther King and Ezra Taft Benson are sitting down and having an enlightened discussion.Hell is a place where God locks Martin Luther King and Ezra Taft Benson together in a cell until they can have an enlightened discussion. I grew up in the Sixties...

Re: Why doesn't God come down and just chillax?

I love this discussion. It seems so much more honest, and humble, than Gospel Doctrine, where people seem to try to convince each other, and themselves about a certain view of reality. Personally I don't have the answer, but I conceive of God as the Source of Love and Truth. Where does Love come fro...

I know parents who are the opposite of you about obedience, and they draw some justification from the church.
