Re: Thanks bretheren.

Here is the backstory. So I am in the process of moving to Phoenix to work for the Arizona Game and Fish. State agencies are notorious for not being super generous with salaries. I trying to find a housing situation that is within our 1 income means. When we got married, Mrs. Mower and I decided to...

Re: An open letter to Thayne

Thought i would bump this thread in the hope that makes it easier for Thayne to bump into. Add me to those willing to pay for that database. A lot of us left a portion of our souls on that board. We also learned a great deal from discussions involving some of the most knowledgable members. That data...

Re: Currently denied by Bishop to give a Baby Blessing...

Corsair - We are blessing our baby whether church sanctioned or not. No one is doing it except for me or my wife. I haven't told the Bishop this, I don't want to get called into a disciplinary court. But in talking with DW, if it's not church sanctioned I think we might turn the event into a little...

Re: Kissing Hank's @$$

A good illustration of how religious dogma has a self-protexting structure. For me it wasn't historical issues nearly so much as the fact that religious excuses for God not giving promised blessings until the next life is the perfect con game.It is not just Mormon ism, but religious teachings in gen...

Re: We Thank Thee o God for Trump

It is rare when I feel like defending the church, but I do when it comes to this. Let's not forget that LDS Republican politicians in general were far bolder in opposing Mr. Trump than most of their Evangelical counterparts. There was a pretty good op-ed in the Huffington Post about this IIRC. When...

Re: Tragedy meets HeartSell

I also went to the concert, and also found it an odd take on the story. Like they were taking Mormon beliefs to manufacture a happy ending on a terrible and tragic tale. I do wonder if Heartsell (how do you do the TM superscript?) is trying to use a psychological manipulation technique I have read o...

Re: Deseret news article on doubt

Similarly, Barbara Morgan Gardner shared from records she kept while counseling Harvard college students undergoing faith crises. She concluded that staying active boiled down to having a strong moral character. This, unfortunately, is one of the most damaging assumptions tearing apart LDS relation...

Re: Deseret news article on doubt

I haven't made it through the whole thing and don't know that I will after reading a sentence like this: In other words, no one of us should ever allow a doubt to reign, when in fact it has not won that lofty perch through proving itself beyond all doubt. How, exactly, is a doubt supposed to prove ...

Re: I was willfully ignorant - I shouldn't complain.

I just wanted to believe. And so I did. Willfully ignorant. If I see Mormonism as a pious fraud, I also need to acknowledge what a willing mark I was given the amount of stuff I willingly put on the shelf. Good insight. If it wasn't for my oldest son leaving the church and me diving in deep to trul...

Re: Used to be in

Welcome, No Tof. Having your kids leave the church can definitely send one down the rabbit hole. I have 3 out and one likely to follow.

I agree that with the impressive Mormon resume you would have a lot to contribute here if you have the time and inclination.

Re: New NOM Here

Hi Everyone. I was born and raised in the church, graduated from BYU, married in the temple etc. I am a recent convert to NOMism after exploring church history and really allowing myself to think critically about my beliefs. It has been liberating to finally admit to myself that I don't believe all...

I may be mistaken, but is that the private group that evolved out of the Faces East forum? That forum is still online, although not very active. Re: Conference Talk Review: Saturday Afternoon - Todd Christofferson, "Abide in My Love"

I've noticed a trend where the church leaders like to quote each other. I rarely hear them quote JS or any of the dead leaders. They quote each other in circles almost like they have all been instructed to quote only living leaders. I also noticed that it was the senior members of the Q15 he quotes...

Re: Conference Talk Review: Sunday Morning, Russell Nelson "Joy and Spiritual Survival"

If we look to the world and follow its formulas for happiness, we will never know joy. The unrighteous may experience any number of emotions and sensations, but they will never experience joy! Joy is a gift for the faithful. It is the gift that comes from intentionally trying to live a righteous li...

Re: Tithing blessings and magical thinking

One reason why the fortunate buy into magical thinking regarding tithing is that flattery works. If you are rich, lucky you, but if you are rich and tithed you are blessed . Works great for keeping the well off contributing to church coffers. Magical thinking also seems a probable explanation for th...
