Re: My best friend under threat

If I was more open about my doubts I'm sure I would face the same problem. I've often pondered if I would resign quietly, or try to make a stand for what I believe is true in a church court. The LDS church has such a disingenuous relationship with truth.

Re: Talk about reading between the lines!

Can the bolder writing between the lines be attributed to a specific person or date? In the JSP vol. that contains Manuscript Book #1 they attribute D&C revisions to various scribes of Joseph Smith. I don't have the particular volume of the JSP that you cite. I wonder if it's in the county library? ...

Re: Turf war and pack mentality

Why do I always feel like I'm a minority? I'm an NOM in Utah. I'm a moderate politically, but in Utah that puts me in with Left. I am even a jazz lover in a music world that loves Pop. I feel pretty good on NOM, but I suspect as a theist I'm still in the minority.😕

Re: Best. Podcast. Ever. Thanks Consiglieri!

While listening to your podcast, I was reminded of 1st Kings 22, where God sends a lying spirit to entice King Ahab to go to battle, and his death. I was also reminded of Joseph Smith, who presumably received a revelation to practice polygamy, but chose to do so dishonestly. The LDS God fits in with...

Re: Revelation of convenience

To what extent do "revelations of convenience" occur today? My guess is that while most sections of the church stay relatively conservative and don't do anything too radical. But the promptings of the spirit are assumed whenever a leader at any level feels some fear that performance of his stewards...

Many of these leaders are in such denial. They don't want to know that their magical world is based on a bunch of JS-BS. Good for you Oliver. :)

Re: Delbert Stapley Letter

Some may say, "Look that's behind us, don't worry about those little flecks of history." Sadly, those little flecks are part of the history that made the church what it is today. We need to acknowledge them in order to look at ourselves honestly. If we ignore past mistakes, can we really overcome th...

Re: Mormon Doctrine 1958-2010

We have a 1958 green cover edition. In the mission field we used to call it the green dragon because it was so hard on the Catholic Church. I think the later editions toned down the anti-Catholic rhetoric.

Re: Many Book of Mormon Geographies

For those who believe Joseph wrote the BOM: do you believe the reference to "the face of the land was changed" was a premeditated explanation by Joseph to account for discrepancies between BOM geography and modern geography? Was Joseph that smart?

Re: Some Truths Are Just Very Harmful

This thread reminds me how much the LDS culture misunderstands grace, and how it screws up the culture. I as a boy I knew my Mom loved me just as I was, it was her gift to me. But I didn't think my Dad, or God loved me unless I got better. I'm generalizing, but that's fairly accurate. Now, I'm worki...

Perhaps if Joseph smith had lived longer, he might have added to D&C 89, like he did several other sections in the D&C.

Yes. I started uncorrelated study about 4 years before the essays came out. If only they had been sooner.

Pale Riders post reminds me of how Brigham Young would call people to go back East to get medical degrees or law degrees. It seems there was knowledge that the gentiles had that wasn't available in Zion in the 19th century

Did anyone want to listen to you for an explanation? My experience is they want to visit you and either make small talk for 45 minutes, or bear their testimony. They don't want to listen. :( Thanks for your posts.

Re: What would make you change your mind?

A more realistic goal would be to understand another person's point of view. Start by saying," I would like to listen to you explain your point of view for 5 minutes if you would listen to my point of view for 5 minutes." The next step could be, I'll try to explain what you believe for five minutes ...
