Re: Guns at church?
If this was something I decided to do, I wouldn't tell anyone about it. No one in my ward would have a clue. It would be very concealed, and would only come out if a psycho came in and started killing people. I understand and respect that there are people here that don't like guns and are made unco...

Re: LGBT Apologetics
1. Never reject your children. If you kicked a child out of your home, go out immediately, find them, and do everything you can to bring them home if they are willing. You need to repent. If you have a gay child, love them. Make sure your children are not afraid to come out. This would be something...

Re: LGBT Apologetics
It's kind of an interesting article, in a way. It's pure apologetics, certainly. The biggest thing it demonstrates is the gulf between the church's polite suggestions to act one way, and their dogged insistence at acting a different way. The article really shows the Church has a "do as I say, not as...

Re: How do I teach primary?
Last time I was in primary I was a long-term sub for someone who had a baby. I never taught a lesson once, never even opened the book. I brought games and puzzles. We did origami. I brought treats. No one ever talked to me about it and I doubt anyone would simply because no one else wants to be the...

Re: How do I teach primary?
When I last taught Primary, quite some time ago now, it was a New Testament year. In theory at least. The actual manual wasn't really about the the NT. On occasion it would use the NT as a jumping off point to discuss something important to the modern Church or some interpretation or meaning the Chu...

Re: What I learned from David Bednar
I recognized long ago that there are a lot of people and topics for which people really cannot be reasoned with. There are some topics for which it gets hard to get people to reason on, no matter the topic. There are some people that are hard to reason with, pretty much no matter the topic. And then...

Re: Coca Cola
The Church was far too busy reeling from polygamy and the fallout at that time. It was only afterwards that the Word of Wisdom became a major aspect of the Mormon experience.

They really don't do cool and relatable and personable very well do they. Interesting try, but it doesn't really come across well. I don't expect it will win over lots of the YA who aren't already fans.

Re: Facts on controversial topics
Let me clarify a little bit: While the legal term is "protected class" and the laws are created to protect oppressed or disadvantaged groups, the laws themselves are neutral, not protecting any one group over another. The law prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, not discrimination against ...

Re: Facts on controversial topics
A lot of the anti-discrimination cases that make the news these days are not based on Federal law. They involve state or local law. There are a ton of other cases, but mostly what makes the news are the cases involving LGBT discrimination. A lot of the reason they get so much attention is because of...

Re: Facts on controversial topics
Can you show me an example of a law that actually has protected classes? I always understood anti-discrimination laws to be universal; i.e. you can't discriminate against any person of any stripe. I find it difficult to believe a class system is legally recognized in any case, but I could be wrong....

Re: Declining convert baptisms
So is it just me, or does 240k convert baptisms last year seem like a high number? I was actually surprised to read it was this many. I know Africa is busy, but that's alot. And we know they didn't come from US/Europe/Japan- industrialized nations. It's a large number but it's quite a bit smaller t...

From what I understand it is illegal to be willing to sell images of Muhammed to one group of people but to exclude another group from buying them. As long as they refuse to sell them to any customer, they are not discriminating. You can't force a business to sell something they don't want to sell....

Re: Latest survey from HQ
They probably imagine that their data is being skewed by a few disingenuous gay-agenda-pushing malcontents, so they ignore those responses and bask in the love of the contented, butt-kissing respondents. If the rest would just pray and read the Book of Mormon more the polls would get back to saying...

I think it's a very interesting analysis. It goes back to the guy who founded NOM and his efforts to keep the good parts and ignore the bad. You've put some items in different categories than I would, but that's okay. Everyone is going to have their own collection of things that fall under the "baby...

Here's the actual question regarding the above paragraph: In your opinion, is it appropriate for church members who experience same-sex attraction to refer to themselves as gay or lesbian? This is such blatant gaslighting that I almost can't believe that they actually published the question. (Almos...

Re: Facts on controversial topics
Mad Jax, thanks for clarifying your basic position. I think we're much closer in position than I feared we might be. The reason I like to ask those sorts of questions is to establish some sort of baseline. Sometimes I've found myself arguing over the details of anti-discrimination law only to later ...
