Thanks Hermy. I feel fortunate that most of my friends and family seem to be able to accept me, even though I sense they are uncomfortable with my belief system. They rarely question me about it. :o This seems to be a typical adjustment to a person who loses their belief.

Re: Ongoing revelations of church child abuse coverups

Local leaders, especially those with connections, are often protected while mere members, especially women, are sacrificed. A particular case of a friend of my father's comes to mind.

I would echo the sentiments of others who have suggested you emphasize that true friendship weathers changes in religious beliefs. It’s been my experience not every Mormon gets that.

Re: Moses...

I hope I'm not deviating to far from the basic topic. I stumbled on this Evangelist Christian Apologetic presentation yesterday.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI1yRTC6kGE It was helpful to me, in that it shed some light on the difference between Septuagint and Masoretic texts. And it was appealingl...

Re: Being Authentic

Anecdotally, when I was still TBM, I had a son who came to me when he was about 13-14 and related he was having a big problem with masturbation. My first step was to ensure that he understood that ALL MEN have to deal with this issue. Every general authority, even Pres. Hinkley, when they were youn...

Re: Lending a hand

I enjoyed the article. Does the advice to "get out of your echo chamber" mean that I should attend a different church each month? Or maybe that my LDS members should attend a different church at least once a month. :D

Today's Deseret News had an article about a San Francisco Gay Chorus joining the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in a joint concert. Very interesting. :)

Re: Trite and often pious TBM phrases

The most righteous spirits were reserved to come forth in this age.-- Once attributed to Bro. Packer, but more likely inspired by Saturday's Warrior. "I never said I was perfect, but there is no error in the revelations I have taught."--Joseph Smith...... which should read, "I have corrected, and wi...

Re: Update abt TBM in laws in my ward

WhatIfIFly, Your in-laws are seriously acting like immature brats. I read stories of devout Mormons acting like this all the time--having absolutely no clue when it comes to someone's lack of belief and healthy social boundaries. Reading these stories I get the impression that this is the norm for ...

I've been watching the Deseret News and the Church News for something about Bro. Robinson's passing. I haven't seen anything yet. He change the way I thought, and I consider him a leavening influence on church members

Re: The evolving LDS concept of God’s nature

I agree with you. I just think that, just as limited geography in the BOM will (or has) gradually filter into LDS thought, so will evolution of the concept of God gradually become part of the thinking of many LDS.

Re: The evolving LDS concept of God’s nature

If the "Evolving LDS Concept of God's Nature" hypothesis proves true, (and I think the evidence supports it), there are still two possibilities (and maybe more) for explaining it. One possibility is that Joseph made it up, but a second is that Joseph and/or God knew that 19th century people, ingrain...

The evolving LDS concept of God’s nature

Since the First Vision has been emphasized, starting around 1900-1920, the Church has distanced itself from the hypothesis that Joseph Smith’s concept of God evolved from quasi-trintarianism in 1829 to the “God was once a man” concept that distinguished the Church until Pres. Hinckley downplayed it ...

Re: Why do leaders preach mostly feel good stuff?

Why would anyone want a fire and brimstone religion? Why embrace a petty and petulant God when you could opt for the God of love? If given a choice between a sanitized versus a festering faith, I would take the sanitized faith. If I am to believe in something, I want that something to be worthwhile...

Re: Corsair's Visit to Nauvoo with Believers

Your account brings back memories of visiting some of the same sites. I remember I found the Christian bookstore in Nauvoo as the most interesting part of my visit. Is it still there? did you get a chance to see it? I think my shelf was still intact when I visited Nauvoo, except for the last time. (...
