Re: Being Authentic

From Advocate over in the Girls Camp thread -- As much as the church gives lip service to being authentic, we all know that it is just lip service and the culture doesn't bear it out. If you don't believe it, try bringing up something you struggle with in gospel doctrine on Sunday and see how it is...

Mormons in general tend to be bad at defending the Book of Mormon from this accusation given a lot of us don't grok the distinction between the Trinity and Modalism.
I should have known such a well informed post would have been made by a Heinlein fan.

Re: Prayer to the ocean

So yes, I had a meditative prayer near the ocean and it soothed my mind to see the ocean as the embodiment of something greater and bigger than myself. Is this god? Is this prayer? That’s for everyone to decide for themselves, I suppose. All I know, is that it was a moment filled with peace and awe...

Re: Prayer to the ocean

Did you really actively pray to the ocean, or did you just sort of meditate near it? Maybe I'm thinking of prayer in the limited LDS manner. I understand how strange it must have felt but it's cool that you mentioned it.

Some people will bring up that Church is a hospital for sinners and the like, but it ends up being more like an art museum, all nice and pretty.
Thank goodness they don't compare it to a taxidermist's display room or a hall for plaster of Paris statues.

Re: Purpose of religion

I think the single most overlooked element in the genesis of religion is hallucinogenic substances. One thing that ancient and less-stratified societies all over the world have in common is the use of psychedelic drugs. These drugs induce intensely spiritual experiences and visions. An important fi...

Re: Why do leaders preach mostly feel good stuff?

Why would anyone want a fire and brimstone religion? Why embrace a petty and petulant God when you could opt for the God of love? If given a choice between a sanitized versus a festering faith, I would take the sanitized faith. If I am to believe in something, I want that something to be worthwhile...

Re: Purpose of religion

I've come to the only conclusion I think is reasonable for me to reach, and that is that if there is any kind of "meta-reality" that encompasses our own, there is no intention for humankind to know what it is. But regardless, humans and highly intelligent animals possess a curiosity which requires s...

...to post this as a topic, but this highly entertaining video game analysis really felt like it was appropriate to share. It doesn't just analyze the gameplay and how much fun it is etc. It talks about themes of indoctrination and the thread of power fantasy throughout most of human psychology and ...

Re: Gaslighting and Creepy Worthiness Interviews

I don't dismiss the claim but I did "diminish" it. Not proud of it. Whenever somebody told me about it I kind of offhand told them something like "I've been through multiple military physicals, being asked about masturbation is pretty tame in comparison." It's a bad logical fallacy that I can't thin...

Re: Church apologizes for Racism!

When I mentioned witch-hunts earlier I was primarily thinking of men who have been accused of sexual assault and harassment who have called the allegations against them witch hunts. I'm unaware of any man in America who has been chased down by terrified mobs and killed because of these sorts of acc...

Re: Church apologizes for Racism!

Similarly using the word "rape" to describe things other than actual rape diminishes the violence of rape and can cause distress to actual rape survivors. Or witch-hunts, though the memory on that is not as sharp. Legally we have the Freedom of Speech to do so, but in my ethical framework I don't t...

Re: Alternate Universe

A lot of people genuinely believe in the Mandela effect. Some of the mis-remembered items that got me are: 1. The above verse 2. The Mr Rogers Theme Song. The lyrics are "It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood" but I swore up and down it was " the neighborhood." Some that I never mistook are the...

I agree, who knows if... Jesus was conceived in wedlock or not He was conceived in the imaginations of those who either deliberately or accidentally merged him with several other messiah figures throughout the history of mythological systems. Any doctrine regarding his genesis is going to consist o...

Re: "I don't make the double standards...

This is probably something that everyone already figured out, but it's been so helpful to me of late: placing responsibility where it belongs. Unfortunately, it appears to be the human condition to find fault where it doesn't lay and overlook it where it does. People may "know" they need to evaluat...

Re: Cobra Kai

I was an 80’s teenager and I loved all the flash backs, the red firebird, and the rock n roll. 😀 Same here. The original wasn't the film that contributed most to my interest in the martial arts, but it did get me to start thinking of training when I was a teenager (my mom said no - not because she ...
