Re: I'm a Mormon campaign.
I believe it's a combo of two things: 1. The longer a video is up, the more views it will get even if it's a small but gradual increase. 2. More importantly, I think the church was pushing a lot more $$$ into the I'm a Mormon videos so they probably got a much bigger trajectory of views early on whi...

Re: Hypocrisy
So sorry Rob - I feel lucky in that I'm not around TBMs much so I miss a lot of that. Just sucks though especially when it reopens wounds and I'm sorry you're having to deal with that. Feel free to vent away - this place has been such a great sounding board and I've always appreciated NOM for being ...

Re: How do you label yourself regarding your belief?
I consider myself a random idiot trying to figure it out that has spiritual moments but doesn't claim to know what they are. I'm open to just about anything as long as there is not evidence against the claims.
But really it's just "a random idiot trying to figure it out."

Re: Are Converts more likely to leave? If so, why?
On the other hand, converts can have an advantage of staying in the church as a nuanced member because they were not indoctrinated with cult-like attachments. That's a good point too. I think for me though that led me to be able to walk away a lot easier - it still took a few years after my faith i...

Re: Are Converts more likely to leave? If so, why?
So as a convert I can give my own anecdotal experience, which is that when you join as a convert you have a lot of pre-Mormonism life that you can't just shake off. For me joining the church felt pretty normal - the Book of Mormon read to me just like the Bible (we all know why that is) and they did...

Re: Is there a single unique truth claim of Mormonism that holds up?
I think some of Joseph's theology answered some questions better than traditional Christianity, like the Problem of Evil, but only because he created a God that didn't adhere to the Christian world's strict require definitions. Joseph's God was an evolved alien who could "cease to be God" if he did...

Is there a single unique truth claim of Mormonism that holds up?
I often see people say that the Mormon church gets more right than wrong (Jim Bennett uses it a lot among others), but is there a single truth claim from Joseph Smith or the doctrines of Mormonism that has held up against advances in science, history, biblical scholarship, etc? At some point it beco...

Re: What to Say to Son
It’s done. DW and I wrote out everything and agreed on it beforehand so there were no surprises. All the details of my beliefs and story were removed, but I’ve got a lifetime to share that if my son cares. He seemed to understand but wasn’t too shocked. He got bored and wanted to get back to the vi...

Happy Thanksgiving to all my Nomies and Go Detroit Lions !!!!!!!! Go Lions?! That's something you don't see often on Mormon themed boards. They just tied it up though so hopefully you get the Thanksgiving miracle. :) Happy Thanksgiving everyone - genuinely thankful for all of you and the community ...

Re: Club-Q shooter was not an ACTIVE Mormon
I saw a comment about this on Facebook I think that really shows how the church frames their membership numbers, but they said something like 'The church loves to boast 16 million members until it doesn't.' Funny how they are quick to throw inactive members under the bus yet include them every year ...

Jfro, I love your Mormon stories episodes!!! I used to read your posts on NOM in Charlie Kelly's voice in my head. But now that I know what your real voice sounds like I read your posts in your voice. Thanks for all the hard work you've put into those episodes. They've helped me see things I ...

Jfro18, I have really liked your work on Mormon stories. What is the best way to support you? Donate to Mormon stories or elsewhere? So I'm not making any $$ for these (I know John pays regulars but I want to make sure no one can ever say I'm doing this for the money) which is probably a really dum...

Re: You're only happy because Satan won
The biggest realization to me is how much more powerful "Satan" is than "God." If I had someone trying to lure my kid away with weird tactics i'd put a stop to it, yet God is like "yeah that child is gonna pay for eternity because he didn't believe my prophets who were clearly wrong all the time." W...

Re: The Brighamite God.
I agree with all of this so much - the version of God in Mormonism is just so different than the God that is portrayed at General Conference and reading Joseph Smith's claimed revelations from this version of God is such a giant red flag that either Joseph Smith made it up with the Mormon God kind o...

Wow... that's really stunning and makes perfect sense. Revelation seems to come from social and legal issues in these latter days, doesn't it?

Re: What to Say to Son
I don't quite know what to add here because ultimately you'll know the best way to talk to your son with an approach that works for your family. Ultimately some people will respond to discussions about confirmation bias and all that, but you also have to make sure your wife is OK with you going into...

Re: Supporting our own
Which is a real challenge, because just learning those things on your own sorta makes you feel that way, regardless of who it's coming from. That's why so many people dip a toe in and then run away because they think they feel "Satan" (aka Captain CogDis, aka your own critical faculty) mocking them...

Re: Where is the Primitive Christianity?
We are also taught that the BoM contains the fullness of the gospel. But it contains nothing that is uniquely Mormon, right? Doesn't that mean someone who is living the fullness of the gospel can ignore anything restored by Joseph Smith, or taught by his successors? If the BoM contains the fullness...
