Re: Switched off vs. Pushed out?

I don't fit in either group. I left because the scriptures aren't scriptural. The Bible broke first, then seeing the literal requirements made on the Bible by revealed scripture finished me off. or is that a testimony issue? I mean it's not about spiritual witness or the lack thereof. It's not Churc...

Re: Morality?

Ad hoc arbitrariness is the problem all traditional religions share. Blind consensus covers this arbitrariness over, but as soon as you start asking questions, it becomes ever more obvious. Ethics and meta-ethics represent attempts to rationalize this arbitrariness, but can never seem to bootstrap ...

Re: Mormons don't believe in Jesus

Mormons believe in the Jesus they find in the scriptures, whether well represented there or not. Others believe in the Jesus they find therein. Jesus is endlessly interpretable.

Re: Your Mission- the best and worst.

Teaching one discussion in first three months? That was my experience in Germany in the 80s. Best part, exploring Germany in a prolonged setting. Worst. Most of that was also an extended religious waste of 8000 dollars and 18 months of my life. My tuition per semester was only 800 just prior to my m...

Re: Is belief a choice?

A lot of epistemomlogy is concerned similarly to the simulation/demon deceived soul with the Brain in a Vat, BIV. Because we only experience "reality" at a remove from said reality we can not directly apprehend what our true state is. I could just as easily be a brain in a nutrient bath being fed a ...

Descartes also worried that he was just a demon decieved soul, akin to the modern simulation argument, just before computers.

Re: Is belief a choice?

Now consider this quote from Scott Bakker. The thoughts of all men arise from the darkness. If you are the movement of your soul, and the cause of that movement precedes you, then how could you ever call your thoughts your own? How could you be anything other than a slave to the darkness that comes ...

Re: Is belief a choice?

I think the question has some problematic assumptions about belief and choice. Rather than a choice, I would say we evolved a set of responses that give us a predilection to what we term religion or belief. We are born with a first draft bias. Then the nurture and individual experience factors come ...

Continuous imporvement, they call it Revelation.
Lately I have been having many of them.

Like Uchtdorf being assigned to Europe, I know it 1 week before it was announced.
I call it logical thinking, many LDS I spoke call the same revelation.
It's setting him up to fail.

That talk was filled with cowardice and fear for himself. It's also like the quote of Oaks used in the PBS miniseries at 52 seconds in this promo. https://youtu.be/NvNDjND4eLI Such self serving hogwash and a way to divert any negative discussion of the leadership that would otherwise drive forward r...

To the rescue is about imposing their view on you. You're not in danger or need of help. That's where I would on start any conversation that veers into this territory.

Don't impose your world view on my situation; it doesn't apply and is very rude.

Re: Resources for Bible authorship and history for Sunday School

This thinking seems to open a whole new can of worms. As I understand it, the newer hypothesis is not that there were fewer authors than J,E,D,&P, but that there were actually more original, but unnamed, sources that were combined by later by an editor or editors, rather than authors J and E. Is th...

There are a number of kinds of selection. Most of the time when talking evolution we talk about stabilizing selection where a particular trait comes to dominate. But there are evolutionary rewards for maintaining a diverse pool as well to deal with sudden changes. You're part of the diversified pool...

Re: Resources for Bible authorship and history for Sunday School

Hmm wide consensus in the documentary hypothesis collapsed at the end of the twentieth century. It's now mostly D with a late P, in persia crafting the rest with Genesis a separate late addition. Interesting. Lots of shake up in pentateuch theory.
