Re: Kids' Ordinances

When DD #1 was born, I was inactive and DW is semi active. We ended up having my FIL doing the name and blessing. At the time i was off the opinion that the LDS church was in a state of apostasy. So i didn't consider the ordinance to have any weight. I allowed it because it was important to DW. A fe...

Re: Lightning Survey: Before the 2014 Plural Marriage Essay, did you know that Joseph Smith practiced it HIMSELF?

Yes. I learned some basics on my mission. I thought it was only a few women. I learned the full extent in '12-'13, ironically from Family Search.

Re: Worldwide bicycle ban?

Perhaps bicycle helmets clashed with wearing a full suit and tie. Or maybe there were too many clashes with missionaries and safety issues leading to some stern recommendations from Kirton and McConkie law firm. The liability for a person on a bike is going to be much smaller than it would be for a...

Re: A Sudden Opportunity and a Missionary Regret

You went on your mission to Japan? Just say, "I spent two years going to church in this country and didn't get to enjoy the culture as much as I could as a result. I'm going to focus on Japan and not church on this trip." I think even a TBM could reasonably take that stance. Maybe take the opportun...

Why do I get the feeling that the church wishes there were just a printing press they could destroy? Missing the good ol' days before the internet where they could sweep stuff under the rug with much less exposure.

Re: Worth of Souls (men vs women)

As far as reactivation, I think they do tend to have better luck with women. I know I did on my mission. I managed to reactivate several older women and there were plenty of women who like the Missionaries. In my ward, once in a while they will reach out to DW and try talking to her. They won't even...

Re: MiniVan Recomendations

As far as price goes, a new Kia will come with a MUCH better warranty than a Dodge, Toyota, or any other mini-van maker. (And if you're lucky, you might find a lease-buy-back / factory certified used one, which will be covered under the remaining warranty...) I'm almost to the point where I don't r...

Re: MiniVan Recomendations

Had a '09 Grand Caravan. Sold it last November with 120K on it. It was starting to have a number of issues. What I understand, the '12's and newer (under Fiat) are much better for reliability, so don't get an older one. At least look at a Ford Transit Connect. You can get a lot of minivan for the mo...

Re: How to do you feel about your mission now?

I'm very mixed on mine. One the positive side, I was very introverted in high school. My mission forced me to learn to come put of my shell and be comfortable talking to strangers and being sociable. Also, Southern California is a melting pot of the world. I learned a lot about many different world ...

Re: Social Media and Conference

The easy answer is "unfollow". For a while you could block content form specific sources. So you could stay friends with someone, but anytime the would share something from say LDSLiving, it would not let that come through on your page. Unfortunately, it looks like they made some changes lately and...

Re: No soup for you !!!

Good to see members taking a stand for themselves and not giving into the person on a power trip. I am curious about a couple thing. Do you have any idea how many members in your area listened to your podcast with Mormon Stories? Also, do you think it had any impact on the church or the members in y...

Something else to keep in mind is that there are a number os sources that state the JSj has a reputation for being a very good story teller. His mother wrote in her biography that JSJ would entertain the fairly in the evenings by making up stores. One of the common themes is that he liked making up ...

Re: What to do with YSA's

On one hand I would not be surprised if they did. On the other, I would because it would cost too much. On a side note, that may be why they never give better numbers on stats like activity levels. The church itself may not even know what it's real activity level is. Or they don't want to know real ...

Re: Missionaries teaching son behind my back

My favorite part of your story was your DM making excuse after sexcuse. Mrs. 2bizE frequently makes sexcuses as well. Ha ha ha ha ha. Oh how the Young Women's lessons seep in deep! The irony is the DW, the English professor, read through my initial post before I submitted it and we both missed that...

Re: What to do with YSA's

One thing I found very telling was the 2nd sentence of the report. Best estimates suggest that 550,000 of these individuals were less active. "Best estimates suggest?" Is that all they can do? I find it telling that they don't know how many members are active any better than people outside the churc...

I let my parents know that any further discussion would result in my contacting the Mission office and president directly.

I am curious what the laws are for something like this.

Missionaries teaching son behind my back

My kids spent the afternoon at my parents. After I got home, DS told us that my parents had the sister missionaries to start teaching him (age 9) this discussions. This was without either DW's or my permission or knowledge. They even went as far as to schedule a 2nd discussion. Needless to say DW wa...
