Re: Church Activity Poll

I have found that frustration with the church is positively correlated with needing extra hours of sleep on Sunday mornings.

Re: Paris Temple much more influencial than Palace of Versailles

"culte" in French has no connotation, "secte" is the word for cult in the modern sense of the term. "culte" can be roughly translated as rite or worship. As an example, mormons in Frane call the chapel the "salle de culte", literally "room of worship". Also, neither of those quotes from the OP were ...

Re: Getting the name of God and Christ wrong

For you, you probably shouldn't care. I posted the post becomes it matter to me. For me it is not a matter of the natives using their own term for Christ, which I'm fine with. It is a matter of the church claiming Christ himself (not the natives) is speaking in the FIRST PERSON in the D&C revelatio...

Re: Getting the name of God and Christ wrong

Interesting to track the etymology of our Modern English's Jesus, but beyond the linguistics why should I care? Does God need a first name? Jesus has got Messiah, Christ, Emmanuel as titles, as well as ones we recognize more as titles because they got translated as opposed to transliterated. Using t...

Re: One True Church Claim: 20 Year Phase Out Plan

.014% of the population Yes! I've run the numbers, even as a TBM for a GD lesson and that is the number I came up with. What number of Mormons are you using? 15,000,000 / 107,000,000,000 equals 0.00014%, not 0.014%. It's much more minuscule than y'all are giving it credit for. Math, Enoch. I ...

Re: Many Book of Mormon Geographies

Very interesting, I had never heard about this before. Obviously Moroni took the plates to NY as an angel, the same way he took them out of NY. Or else the 3 Nephites. Volcanism is actually about as plausible as it is in the Americas, given the time limit. I think that taking the Malay geography mod...

Re: What would make you change your mind?

I'd change my mind if the church would integrate women and LGBT people into the priesthood and temple as they have done with blacks. I'd also require a nudge from plausible deniability to plausibility on at least one truth claim.

11 posthumous marriages (sealings to the prophet as late as 1880) and 12 "never married" ones, though I'm not sure what that means. Also the usual 37 wives. I wonder how they get the number 57 out of that?

Re: Paris, well what to say (now with pics)

I took a few friends out to the Paris temple. It's interesting to have feedback from total atheists who didn't know much about the Church. Here are a few points about how the LDS Church/members are viewed in secular Europe : - Surprise about how nice the construction was, but no problem with buildin...

Re: Total Facepalm Moment

Actually, you spoke those exact words, you were talking about a Mormon church, not the Mormon Church.
Mormon being used as an adjective instead of part of a "misnomer", a more accurate response would have been :
"It's actually a Jesusy Christian Latterish-diurnal Saintsy church, not a Mormon church".

Re: Other churches

Find one that believes in music! I haven't gone church shopping yet, but I have attended a few Roman Catholic masses (in Europe, so my experience may not apply). It's easy to show up whenever you want and sit in the back, pretty much unobserved, if you want a more introverted church-going experience...

Re: Easter and Celebration

It was brought up in my GD class, that the reason we don't celebrate Easter, like other churches, is similar to the reason we don't use the cross as a symbol in our church. Mormons choose to celebrate the life of christ, not the death, take that for what you will I guess, but everybody nodded and s...

Re: Limited Eternal Progression Theory

I think a God who is neither omnipotent nor omniscient solves this problem quite neatly. You have to bump God down from a pedestal of perfectness and say that He is just a very good guy progressing along. Then we get to be very good people progressing along just like Him in the celestial kingdom or ...

Re: Easter and Celebration

So... Do Pagans get upset that Christians have hijacked all of their "holidays"? Are there major holidays that aren't hijacked from pagans? I suppose Thanksgiving, Labor Day and Indepedence Day are more original. Halloween is more of a holiday that pagans use to hijack the Christian churches. Or at...

Re: Suggestions???

Here my two cents of amateur psychology : People live with the assumption that they are always right. It's a waste of time and energy to be in constant self-doubt, so you persuade yourself that you've thought hard enough and that you are correct. Humans don't change their minds unless they have seri...

Re: Oath And Covenant Of The Priesthood

There isn't much more to it than that. Mormonism tries to bolster up the consequences to priesthood holders, but in reality women are held to the same standard as men. If priesthood holders truly had more consequences or were held to a higher standard, I would take greater stock in the Oath and Cov...
