Re: Prophet, seer, and revelator are titles in the church, not descriptions of what someone does
I'm a racecar driver. I don't actually drive a racecar, but I could one day, so I'm a racecar driver. Joking aside, I think some of your steps are out of order. The new guy gets set apart in the calling within a week or two of the old guy passing away, regardless of the timing in relation to confer...

Prophet, seer, and revelator are titles in the church, not descriptions of what someone does
Something I've been thinking about for a while is how the church uses language. I think there are many examples of the church using definitions that most non-church people wouldn't think is typical (e.g. translate doesn't mean change from one language to another, it means receive a message from God ...

Re: The watering down of what is revelation
Strictly speaking, a revelation could be described as anything that reveals a previously unconsidered, unobserved, or unrecognized thought or idea. Which is certainly not something that could be said of anything that goes on in LDS meetings. ... A leadership meeting about doing better at ministerin...

Re: Racist Incident at Duke/BYU Volleyball Game
I am more and more embarrassed to be associated with the church and BYU (as an alum) in recent months. It is astounding, but not surprising, that there weren't any officials at BYU willing to stop the game or tell the fan to get out. As much as church members like to sing "do what is right and let t...

The watering down of what is revelation
I attended a leadership meeting for stake conference recently. The stake president told everyone that the meeting was supposed to be a "revelatory" experience, which he described as meaning we hear instructions (e.g. get all your ministering interviews done) and when we feel we should follow those i...

Re: No more “tithing settlement…”
Just one more thing that shows the church is most interested in money. I was taught growing up that one purpose of tithing settlement was to check the records for the year and make sure your contributions had been recorded properly. No need for that now with online tithing (you can see your submissi...

Re: 4 % tithing sounds like a good idea !!
+1 on the 0% plan. In terms of changing the meaning of tithing, take a look at this Joseph Smith Translation scripture in the Old Testament: Wherefore, Abram paid unto him tithes of all that he had, of all the riches which he possessed, which God had given him more than that which he had need. JST, ...

Re: Crazy lawsuit idea
I don't think there's a case. The church isn't legally bound by any revelation it may have published. It can always claim that newer private revelation superseded it anyway. And there is no contractual obligation between the church and its members. So the scripture isn't binding on anyone or party ...

2nd best calling is the ward parking lot specialist. 3rd best calling is… Nah, there aren’t any good callings. Has anyone actually asked her if she wants a calling? Just leave them alone if they don’t want one. Edited to add: my response is coming from currently not having a calling nor wanting one...

Re: 2nd Best Calling for PIMO Member?
Obviously the 1st best calling for a PIMO is no calling. But assuming they must be offered a calling, what is the 2nd best calling? I'm in a position in the ward where I can influence a calling that will be extended to a sister. I don't know the sister well, but I am 98% certain she is PIMO. She cu...

Re: Friendships & Family relations inside and outside of Mormonism
I've been thinking along the same lines for a few months now. I'm in my 40s, and am sad about how few true friends I have. I've done everything right according to the church: always active, served a mission, married early, kids early, highly educated, serve in callings, etc. I'm also an introvert wh...

Meaning of bird on Moroni picture?
I noticed a member in my ward has an unusual photo of their family. They have the photo below posted as their family photo that shows in the ward directory. https://i.ibb.co/kDvF2JH/Moroni.jpg I don't know this family, but they are at church every week and have given talks so they seem to be active ...

Re: FSY and good, better, best
Our stake isn't up for attending EFY this year (I believe your stake is selected to attend once every two or three years) so we don't have this particular conflict, but I see a lot of the same conflicts with other youth activities. We live in a prosperous society and people have funds to travel and ...

Re: 17 new temples?
I think proximity combined with the idea that "if you build it, they will come" is a major factor as the average age of church membership increases. Or in other words, it gives older members a responsibility which keeps them engaged with the church and paying tithing. Finding a calling for older mem...

Re: I'm so excited for General Conference
I wish conference would be like that. I'd love to see Nelson get up and talk about how evil Putin is for killing civilians in Ukraine. At least it would be interesting. Instead, we'll get the same crap about how end times are near, and the world's problems would be resolved if everyone would just be...

Re: Mandalorians
I see similar themes and in a lot of ways the strict adherence is like the LDS church. In the earlier show (The Mandolarian) it showed him removing his helmet and why it happened. But the chief prophetess didn't care to hear why. It was all about obedience. This is where it is very similar to the LD...

Christmas Sacrament Meeting Program - Fun to see culture shifting
Our ward had our Christmas sacrament meeting program yesterday, and it showed church culture is changing. The program was a mix of 5 musical numbers and 4 talks. Two of the musical numbers were different from what is typically done. The first musical number was a group of primary boys singing "What ...

Re: Why Did I Teach Primary for 8 Years?
In my ward it's rare that new members get put in primary. The idea is the new member needs to build relationships with many people in the ward, and that is hard to if you are stuck in primary. Primary is seen as an easy calling. So you might put someone in primary who needs a break. You might also p...
