Re: When did religion start and what is its purpose?i
When God spake to Adam. Honestly, guys, didn't you go to Sunday School? If God does send spirits down to Earth to live in human bodies, you could define Adam as the first spirit He sent, and this perspective gives you a date and a purpose. If not, possible kickstarters are : - someone having an NDE ...

Re: Church was way more awesome today than average
I forgot : we also got science preached over the pulpit! As in "some of us humans have been sheperds for the past 10,000 years". Also, before you get too excited about my ward, the 1st councilor really likes to assign the whole SM meeting to ONE TALK from conference. So we get a fifteen-minute talk ...

Church was way more awesome today than average
There is some hope, it seems. This Sunday, almost all of the stars aligned, and we got - a visiting pianist who could play perfectly and also played fast - a talk by someone who loved Les Misérables (the novel) and went into depth quoting the novel (the subject of the talk was the talk from GC by Re...

Re: What would the church prefer
Well, the Church would prefer that you stick around, for damage control as well as a chance (even very small) of getting you back. You shouldn't feel guilty about jumping through the hoops to get your TR renewed. If you can honestly answer yes to the last question, you're A-OK, every other question ...

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
I can almost say a full yes to this, since I have drastically reduced my meat consumption for environmental reasons. I do not follow the hot drinks clause, because I am betting my life and soul that mildly flavored hot water will neither kill me nor send me to hell.

Re: Testimonies as a Manipulation Tool
You all had radically different first "I know"s from mine. I never bore my testimony for a long time because I didn't have one. Since I determined that I did have one, I have only done so a handful of times. The reason I'm still mostly believing is that at my highest "I know"iness, I only knew that ...

I refuse to give one cent to an institution which causes such suffering for young LGBT members. I am still deciding what to do exactly, so I answer "working on getting it set up".

You covenant to keep the commandments, and as Jesus said, love thy neighbor. I strive to do that (and I suck at it), and I also strive to wake up on Sunday mornings (and I suck at it) so yes.

Yes. I am faithful to all my spouses. All of my spouses are also celebrity ninja astronauts. The magical mathematical properties of the empty set... As a NOM I get to redefine the definition of chastity. I would define it as not cheating in a committed relationship and not bringing children into the...

Re: A different Q15 ---------- Question #4 (which actually includes three questions)
Yes. Since the LDS priesthood is a construct of the LDS church, of course the guy in charge is in charge. I sustain Uchtdorf, so technically I sustain do sustain members of the Q15. And I sustain my bishop and most of the leaders in my ward. I don't have much contact with the stake level or higher u...

Re: A different Q15 ---------- Question #3 (Restoration)
Yes. Many people have been brought into contact with the divine through the LDS church - so I can accept that the church, as a movement, has worked to some extent for a people of a certain time and place. (Although - As I have pointed out to my SP - I believe I can find as much truth in the XYZ chu...

Re: A different Q15 ----------Question #2
No. The only things I would comfortably call sin are deliberate serious physical or psychological injury, and so the concept of the Atonement I've got is hardly useful to me.
Though I could get on board with Terryl Givens' idea of the Atonement, no testimony for it.

Re: Temple recommend barcode
This is creepy. I was wondering if you could just create a recommend, add a barcode to it that was perhaps a TBMs and it would scan and get the green light. It has probably been done. It should be easy. If you can borrow someone's (or even your own) and figure out what data is represented on the ba...

Re: Creative Mormon Mythology
How the Lamanites got their dark skin Across the sea, O my Best Beloved, there was a Man named Laman. And this Man had a Brother, and his name was Nephi. Nephi had silly ideas, like building transoceanic vessels, and tried to make Laman do most of the work. Brother Laman was mad, madder than you can...
