Re: signing the Sam Young petition about youth interviews

You can always sense something is up when the bishop asks the young person to go into greater detail and to speak slower.

Re: Creative Mormon Mythology

Memorable Moments in BYU History This particular moment happened in 1968 at a dance in the Wilkinson Student Center. It was in the ballroom and young couples had stepped onto the dance floor for an ever popular polka. Polka music was very popular at BYU since many other forms of music were under sc...

Re: Hey we believe in grace too!

Does this mean the full lyrics of Martin Luther's hymn, A Mighty Fortress, can be added back into the Mormon Hymnbook? The full song contained too much emphasis on grace, even though the Authorities at the time really liked the melody by JS Bach.

Sacrament Meeting of the Future

SALT LAKE CITY - Ever wonder what a future Sacrament Meeting Might be like? No more confusion among the deacons as to which presiding authority to serve first, which row has been missed, or how to line up properly. No more priests fumbling the precise wording of the prayer. A Sacrament Meeting exec...

Finian's Rainbow and the Three Nephites Seventy-one years ago on June 1, 1946, the Three Nephites finished the main song for the award-winning Broadway musical Finian's Rainbow. The main song was entitled, "How are Things on Hill Cumorah". Below is a snippet of the original lyrics: I hear a bird, a...

Re: Dealing with TBMs

TBMs are wonderful people. While they may have a different set of religious and political beliefs and perhaps view the earth as having a hollow center filled with the lost tribes of Israel, they never-the-less do many kind and selfless deeds. Just don't press a cross against their foreheads.

Re: God and Mary the mother of Jesus

Hard to imagine that God the creator of the universe would be able to bring anything into existence without boinking it. Boinking in all its splendor is the basis for Mormon belief throughout the dispensations. Any talk of creation that does not involve boinking is heresy and might need to be resolv...

Re: Why are Mormons mostly conservative Republicans?

Related question: why does the Republican party claim an alliance with Jesus while consistently pursuing actions that are in direct contradiction to Jesus' teachings about how we should treat each other, particularly the poor and sick? Makes you wonder whether the Republican vision for the future o...

Keep your eyes on the prize so you don't end up as a TK-Smoothy!
Speaking of which, I understand the Sonic Drive-In of Sandy, Utah is having a special from now until December 10th on TK-Smoothies.

I'm ambivalent about near-death experiences. Don't want to die until my appointed time, but it would be fun to see Narnia and live to tell about it.

Re: Why are Mormons mostly conservative Republicans?

The Church once made a Faustian bargain with Leland Stanford. In exchange for the support of the Republican Party, the Presidency of the Church would deliver the Utah vote to the Republican Party. The Republican Party of that era was the more liberal of the two parties. The Republicans kept their ba...

Re: Treadeth down and teareth in pieces

I have wondered if this is one reason the Mountain Meadows killers disguised themselves as Indians. The Mormon's would not have felt a need to dress as Indians if the Paiutes had agreed to participate in the massacre as requested. But would the Paiutes do it? Ohh Noooo , the Paiutes felt a need to ...

Re: No more fire insurance.

I have never accepted the concept of a tithing settlement meeting. An exclusive meeting to settle tithing (making sure you pay) is an abusive use of ecclesiastical power and it puts the bishops in a position akin to a tax collector such as the Sheriff of Nottingham rather than as a pastoral caregive...
