Re: Bednar talk on missionary callings

The short of it, is my faith in church leadership at the time would have prevented me from thinking they were just pulling locations out of uninspired air. Even a decision to move me due to disobedience would have been considered inspired, even if I would have felt guilt and shame over it and felt i...

Re: "Came out" a fourth time to my family

Discussing it will not resolve it. Your parents cannot comprehend not believing, so discussing your reasons will just go in circles. Make a decision about your life, and INFORM your parents of your decision. Or just do it and tell them after the fact. Yep. At this point it's highly unlikely that hi...

Re: Why I Can't Turn to the LDS Church for a Sense of Community.

While I do believe that all Mormons believe differently from each other in many, many ways, no one is really allowed to say so, and I've always disliked that there's the assumption, particularly among very conservative, orthodox TBMs (who are also the most vocal), that we all believe the same way. ...

Re: Why I Can't Turn to the LDS Church for a Sense of Community.

Fundamentally I'd never turn to the LDS Church for a sense of community because I couldn't be myself in that community and still be invited. This is not to say I'd never associate with Mormons, after all my family and my wife are Mormon, or with Christians in general* (that'd be cutting myself off f...

Re: What are you drinking right now?

They also have wine, coffee, kombucha, and draft, craft root beer (for my DW). These things don't matter to me, as I'm more of a beer guy, but still. It is AWESOME. We are probably going to move in the summer and I'm having anxiety about leaving this store behind. Having a drink (or two) while one ...

I have been loving this stuff lately. Citrus-infused IPAs have become my jam.
Have you tried the lime Citradelic? I like it better but then I'm a sucker for lime (and I quite like Dogfish Head's SeaQuench Ale as a result, though it's not an IPA but a hybrid-sour style).

Re: Creation conundrum

Is it fair or relevant to look at the intelligent design issue like this? When people talk about needing a creator, a lot of it makes sense. For instance, if the earth were even a little bit closer to, or further from, the sun, then life on this planet, as we know it at least, would not be possible...

Re: Preparing a defense

I got several calls from the HP group leader and the executive secretary this week. It seems some one in the ward wants to talk to Bro. Ricks, er... Bro. Blues about his situation. I asked one caller, "what do you want to talk about" and the reply: "Oh, I just want to talk". I really think my curre...

Re: Feeling a little lost.

I feel lost lately. I feel relatively well versed in the issues with Mormonism, it's truth claims, and it's epistemology. Which is to say in the words of The Donald, "its all a bunch of bunk." I don't really know where to go from here? Do I take a deep dive into all the ins and outs of the top issu...

Re: Ménage à Ghost

I First, let's demand scriptural evidence that "Ménage à Ghost" is doctrinal. Next, we ought to politely ask long time married couples in our wards locally to confirm that this worked well in their own relationship. It would also be worth checking that other LDS therapists are entirely on board wit...

Re: LDSanswers.org

I struggle with this - should we respect our sisters' and brothers' right to believe in nonsense, or do we challenge this kind of thinking when we see it? Those two positions aren't in conflict. It's possible to both respect their right to believe what they want as well as challenging their beliefs...

Re: Garments tied to fidelity?

Removal of garments is a rejection of the temple, not marriage. Maybe your relationship was defined almost exclusively by the church? I would expect this to be a common situation. You may need to spend some time getting to know each other again if you no longer have beliefs in common. I know for my...

Re: What are you drinking right now?

Highly recommend this or 60-Minute Dogfish Head as highly drinkable, accessible IPAs for all my NOM friends looking to expand their palates. Bell's Two-Hearted is also a nice accessible IPA. It was the first IPA I liked. Sadly, Bell's distribution out west is limited to Arizona and parts of Califor...

Re: Taking off the garment

My wife in a fit of freak out demanded I hand over all finacial access under the ultimatum of divorce. While I was able to maintain enough control to not bite that hook in my anger* I allowed myself to refocus the need to respond in some manner into ditching the uniform of the organization I saw (an...

Re: My Changing Palate

Beer is definitely not sweet. I think the key is if you've accepted and enjoy the bitterness. Something like an IPA has a lot of malt (which gives sweetness) to balance out all the hops, if the hops aren't shocking your pallet then you can tend to notice the sweetness in them* and some beers like W...

Have you reached the point where beer tastes sweet? Some are most definitely sweet but even a lot of drier beers have a sweetness to them, sorta like the sweetness of milk.

Re: Missionary social training 101

What I find fascinating is that the membership looks on these boys and girls as if they are somehow more knowledgeable in the church than they are. I just don't get it. I never understood as a believer, either. These are 18 - 21 year old boys and girls, fresh in the world with eyes wide and a lacki...

Re: Missionary social training 101

Some things the missionaries do are a result of social deafness resulting from a lack of social and life experience. The other part of the picture is it arises from their training, they're constantly pounded with a messages that tend to either reinforce or create bad manners, messages such as: They'...
