Re: Debate night: RFM vs Midnight Mormoms

This should be broadcast on pay-per-view. I'm a big fan of RFM and I would be optimistic for him, but a debate format is a rather different beast than we usually see. Anything could happen and it's entirely possible for both audiences to be slightly disappointed while both RFM and Midnight Mormons d...

Re: John Larsen and the handcart horror story

I have listened to probably all of the Mormon Expression episodes and I thought I had heard all of the horror stories. The terrible conditions of the handcart companies were new to me.

Re: what sins are worse than extra-martial sex?

The bishop's handbook does not have any special instructions in case someone is convicted of murder, for example. But I suspect that this is not out of any neglect. Felony convictions are already known to condemn a person. I do not know if someone sent to prison for a murder gets an automatic excomm...

Re: Temple changes

I am, in fact, one of those rare and prevaricating individuals with a current temple recommend. "That sounds nuts!" I hear you say. "Why would you do that? How do you do that?" The short answer is that I am clearly wired differently than most apostates as Red Ryder, Beetbox, and AZ Flyer can attest....

Re: How many would drink the poison?

From my reading, Apostle George A. Smith acting under Brigham's orders was very instrumental in ginning up animosity for the Baker-Fancher party. Was George A. off the reservation??? He was known to be a big talker and braggart. I would still say he represented the church in general even if Brigham...

Re: How many would drink the poison?

The frightening thing is that this a murderous version of this experiment was tried in LDS history. If you had been living in Cedar City, UT in 1857, would you have agreed to assist besieging and then killing all of the members of the Baker-Fancher party? If you say "No", how much danger would you b...

Re: Jeffrey Holland is a terrible human being so it's fitting he gave this talk at BYU

Holland's talk certainly establishes LDS doctrine in the current day. Seeing the myriad, agonized responses among the Mormons and ex-Mormons was expected. Liberal believers are heavily torn while the conservatives agree while still torn over the vax and face-covering announcement earlier in August. ...

Re: Lamanites called to Enoch Space City?

I like Moksha's idea of them being beamed up :D It kind of reminds me of reasons I've heard as to why dinosaur bones exist. I have heard Evangelicals say, "Dinosaurs? I think you mean Dragons. " Our favorite church is not the only ones with post hoc explanations via literalist, inerrantist views on...

Re: Six onties of silver

Let me risk validating Book of Mormon apologetics in one tiny way. The money system and payment of six Onties gives an idea of how much Zeezrom offered Alma to recant. In Alma 11:3 judges get a senum of silver for one day of labor. In verses 11 through 13 we find that an onti equals 7 senums of silv...

Re: You are not welcome

They're getting sealed early in the AM on a Saturday. We aren't even going to the temple. Why would we? So I can sit outside and feel like a second class citizen? So I can babysit my 20-something nieces and nephews? Neither my wife, nor any of my own five kids want anything to do with the church an...

Re: Jfro, I have another project idea for you.

A marvelous work and a wonder is pretty cringeworthy I have not looked at Marvelous Work and a Wonder in years. Even as a full believer it was not hard to see that it was not particularly good as a systematic theology. But it was almost required reading as a missionary in the 1980s. I'm not sure it...

Re: “We really want buttery soft fabric”

Maybe they could get out of the underwear business and get into the ring business like the Masons :D I think that the Masons already have entirely too much influence over LDS spiritual practices. I can imagine the rollout of the jewelry: "For decades you have enjoyed temple worship with Masonic roo...

Re: Nelson's Spiral of Death

I am imagining that the apologetic explanation involves Nelson being actually concerned for his life at some point. Perhaps he overestimated the danger he was in. "Ask the class to share an experience where they thought they were in a dangerous situation and turning to prayer brought them comfort."

Re: Corsair Speaks at Sunstone Yet Again

This sounds like a fascinating original idea. Just a suggestion--you should at least mention the brilliant Mormon subplot in The Expanse series! It was almost uncomfortable to watch those scenes with young missionaries inviting various Belters to game nights and firesides. But at least we now know ...

Corsair Speaks at Sunstone Yet Again

About 6 hours before the final deadline for the 2021 Sunstone Symposium speaker registration, I came up with a crazy idea and submitted it. I have to be honest that it does not appear difficult to get to speak at Sunstone. In any case, I will be presenting "One Thousand Years of Mormonism" at 8:30 A...

Re: Temple Garments discussed in the New York Times

Could you imagine if +500 women marched around the COB holding signs that read “Let our vaginas breathe!” and chanting we want better underwear! This should have been the tactic of Ordain Women seven years ago instead of just standing at the door of the priesthood session of conference. I know whic...
