Re: Intractable Conflicts Reduces Empathy for the Out Group

"The only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth" D&C 1:30 The LDS church maintains and honors this phrase. D&C section 1 is specifically listed to be the introduction to this collection of revelations. As a result, only marginal consideration is given to scholars, leaders, and phi...

Re: Indian placement program: legal thriller

This case could make a tear jerker movie with the right script. I do remember meeting a, uh, "Lamanite" woman who lived with my grandparents during the late 60s. She seemed nice enough and did not appear to be particularly harmed or sad by the experience. But an experience like the Indian Placement ...

Re: Looks like I'm gonna pick a fight with my SP

Well done, thou good and agitating servant. Due to some entirely misled inspiration, I was asked to teach in my own Elders Quorum next Sunday after Thanksgiving and that is the lesson I was assigned . I'm planning on steering the theme towards dealing with more challenging gospel topics. I plan on m...

Re: Taking a small one for the team

I am prepared to once again attend tithing settlement and summon my best poker face telling my good bishop that I am a full tithe payer. Maybe I could try attending tithing settlement this year with a drink in me. I think a great, new podcast series would be attending a variety of LDS functions aft...

Re: Stop complaining

Can you imagine what a hilarious skit that Studio C could do with this setup? But it would be far too rhetorically embarrassing to actually produce. I'm largely indifferent to Studio C but my family loves them. They are funny, but I can't imagine them satirizing any real LDS doctrine or practice.

Re: Well, that didn't take long!

Over the weekend my husband received an envelope in the mail with no return address. Inside was a copy of a conference talk. There was no personal message of any kind, just the conference talk. Can you reveal which talk? It might be an amusing way to sharpen our rhetorical knives over the content. ...

Re: The presence of evil?

So what causes this physiological feeling? Is it personal taste and comfort that once crossed creates an emotional reaction? Like me getting annoyed at country music? Or when a new experience is met with a tinge of uncertainty? Like landing in a new airport and trying to make your way through a new...

Re: Facebook and Divorce

It's no great revelation that social media like Facebook has complicated human relationships as much as it might have enhanced them. I have a good friend who got divorced in the early 90s long before Facebook. But he was amused once he joined Facebook ten years later because it kept suggesting that ...

Re: The scriptures hold the answers to MOST of life's problems.

If we added the Desiderata and the Serenity Prayer to the LDS Canon, we would have some insightful guidelines to follow. If we simply put a thorough study of Job and Ecclesiastes into the curriculum of Elder's quorum I might start paying tithing again. Correlation has removed the most interesting p...

Re: What are you drinking right now?

I had my first coors light last night. Wasn't bad. I have wanted to have an evening of trying out a bunch of beers in shot glass quantities. I drink so infrequently that I still have very little perspective on the most common beers available. It might be helpful to try the most commonly advertised ...

Re: Devotional: Walking the Road to Emmaus

It's refreshing to get the chance to appreciate a widely regarded saint. While I'm reasonably confident that this quote from St. Theresa of Avila might have some appreciation with an LDS Sunday School, it would consistently be held in lower regard than whatever Jeff Holland said last April and Octob...

Re: A sin resistant generation

I would much rather raise a generation of kind, reliable, confident kids who are just nice people than another generation of poor souls feeling guilty when they are not sure what they are doing wrong, but they must be doing something wrong because we are all sinners right? When people bear testimon...

Will we be automatically be issued a beard card? Or will we need to plead our case before our bishop? Let me know if any of these words were in the casting call: white, delightsome, dark, loathsome.

Re: More NOM posters needed

We could pay a low level 70 to give a talk about us during conference. Not some Seventy! We need a stalwart apostle to denounce us. I recommend a revision of Packer's 1993 "three enemies of the church" talk . The dangers I speak of come from the "inquire of Google" movement, the "pay tithing...

I have the podcast queued up. I am looking forward to it like a visit to the dentist. It will be good to deal with this but it's not going to be enjoyable. The gaslighting will not be welcome. But you bring out a couple of critical points. They won't be answering the question of why seer stones are ...

These conversations are familiar. The only difference is when homework is Spanish and the wife tells the kid to pray for the gift of tongues. I would recommend praying for the gift of Google Translate. I have started telling my children, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of Google , that give...

Re: A House Built on Sand

I also believe there is certainly room in the Church for people to believe the BoM to be fiction. The problem with this fictional belief is it is a house built upon sand and when the wind blows and the seas come ashore that house will not stand. When I read this on another board, I wanted to agree ...

New here and incredibly angry! Yes, the angry phase seems to linger like the smell of sweaty gym socks in the back seat of you car. It's like you were shuffled into crazy land and everyone around you is claiming that clearly you are in the wrong while you see the silliness inherent in the system. L...

Re: Assumptions of evidence

The early LDS church had a full century of assuming that all the evidence was out there just waiting to be found. So by the time that Thomas Murphy embarked on his philosophically ill-fated Book of Mormon expeditions it was ingrained in LDS culture. The "Ancient America Speaks" film only reinforced ...
