Re: One True Church Claim: 20 Year Phase Out Plan

What is so compelling about the church if it is not actually the "the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased" (D&C 1:30) ? I was an obedient, diligent Mormon because I thought that if the LDS church was TRUE , then any sacrifice for it ...

Re: One True Church Claim: 20 Year Phase Out Plan

The case against exclusivity hinges on 2 basic arguments: Mercy/Grace and the simple math of humanity. Math is fun so let’s start there. Here’s a fine BBC article on the subject: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-16870579 our important quote is: “There are currently seven billion people alive today a...

Re: One True Church Claim: 20 Year Phase Out Plan

What's interesting is this is a natural progression of the "we're not weird" movement. Over the years the "truth is where you find it" movement has naturally allowed for the idea of exclusive truth to pale.

Re: LDS Church and BSA part ways

Here's the question:

Does Scouting drive young men out of the church?

If yes, well, fixed that.

If no....oops?

Re: LDS Church and BSA part ways

Friends of Scouting will continue...but if you child is 14 will you pay in anymore? I've been YMP and I never encountered a young man who was gung-ho to wear his uniform to Mutual. The Trib has an article on this and in there they mention that at 14 girls come into a young man's social circle and th...

Re: Many Book of Mormon Geographies

The geography doesn't fit anywhere unless you close your eyes in prayer...The hard twisting of "facts" supporting the BoM either shows great imagination or flailing desperation; depends on the author.

Re: What to do with temple ceremony clothes

You will still need the clothes many years in the future for a traditional Mormon burial. One of the reasons I resigned was to put to bed this issue. Although my wife promised not to bury me in temple gear I just believe that the pressure will be too great and she'll cave--love you sweetie, just th...

The beauty of the question is that it identifies the three major philosophical groups.

L'il Help?

Am I confused or does https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/SP6X-Q65 list Joseph with 57 marriages?

Click on Joseph and then scroll down in the left window and Marriages (57) shows up.

Re: The Quiet Death of the Old School

In the summer I'm a motorcycle safety instructor. One of the mantras we have is: "You see what you look for". Example: When I was a news shooter for the local ABC affiliate I was at the scene of a motorcycle/car collision, one of the classic "car left turns into path of motorcycle" ones. The lady wh...

Re: Hurt and angry

I'm going to go with "be of good cheer." We learn by doing. Often we bump our heads--or get whacked on the head--but we should use the opportunity to learn to duck! Don't let the Church continue to control you, letting it make you feel anything other than wisdom from your misadventure is giving it m...

Re: The Quiet Death of the Old School

By their fruits you will know them; and what are the fruits of the Church if not the people? I think we may underestimate the power of the grassroots of the church. The Priesthood ban was lifted in part because of coming lawsuits but also because the people of the Church weren’t willing to defend it...

If that was the old school answer what was the purpose of doing sealings for the dead in the old school?
Just in case...besides you get Temple brownie points.

The Quiet Death of the Old School

I had an interesting conversation once with a fairly well know LDS scholar and the issue arose about what happens after death to a marriage where a good, covenant keeping, celestial LDS woman is married (and deeply in love with) a good, honest, kind, charitable non-member. The answer surprised me an...

Re: What can you openly not believe in?

I like the 10 years historical authenticity of the BoM. Anyone with any knowledge of any science can't really debate DNA. You can see what % neanderthal you have in your DNA surely we can see if the Natives have Jewish DNA. There is a sub on Reddit with an African tribe that has Jewish decent about...

Taught v. Learned

One of the most unsettling issues for folks going through a faith transition is when we present an issue to a fellow Latter-day Saint and they answer with “You didn’t know that?” or “I’ve always known that.” Which is used as a conversation killer; it’s kind of a spiritual “what, are you stupid or so...

Re: What can you openly not believe in?

I would offer that given statements that "The Book of Mormon isn't a historical document" there's an opening to simply place it in the pile with Noah, Jonah, and other "allegorical" stories there is a growing opening to let the Book of Mormon veracity slip. This is a slowly growing section of the ac...
