Re: Was Joseph Smith martyred, murdered, or removed from his place?

My current thoughts are that it was frontier justice. First of all Give It Time. . . . I smile at your avatar! Nice! Smith's big offense was his secret polygamy practice. After having denied it for years, Smith's practice was exposed by some dissident Mormons in the Nauvoo Expositor. Its publishers...

Re: BYU Prof: People who leave Church deficient in "character"

I saw it, and my thought about people such as this reminds me very much of a gyroscope, always spinning around at a frantic pace, but not really going anywhere. My personal belief in Christ has actually grown since walking away. I would state it takes strong character to walk away from an lying and ...

Re: I'm Serving With A New Bishopric Now

Keep in mind, you were called by the stake and set apart by the stake, and will eventually be released by the stake. It's normal to keep the ES on for smooth transitions, and this happens many times even when new stake presidencies are called, as well as area 70s. Deep breaths after that because the...

Re: Curious "Word of Wisdom" Question

That very question came up in a Bishop Training meeting, and the SP looked at his first counselor who is a doctor, who shook his head no. The SP said, "There's your answer."

That might be a stake president roulette question, but that was the response from one.

Writing me a check for all of the tithing I paid for 40 years. If you forgive the fox for stealing your chickens, he'll then steal your sheep.

In short. . . . . it will never happen.

Re: It's that time of the every-other-year again

I received a call from the Executive Secretary saying the rolls indicated I was due to come in and have my recommend renewed. I told him I did not see the need to do that given I didn't see any reason to go to the temple. He asked why I felt that way, and I said, "I've already been through for mysel...

Re: I sent a 52 page letter to the 1st Presidency: This was their response. PART 1

“Members of the Church are discouraged from making telephone calls or writing letters to General Authorities about doctrinal issues or personal matters. With an ever-increasing Church membership, responding personally to these inquiries presents an almost insurmountable task and would make it diffi...

Re: Joseph Smith Papers

I would point out the papers openly discuss controversial issues with the practice polygamy, using terms like "conjugal relations" (xxv) and "polyandrous marriages" (xxvii), and refuse to shy away from facts that the Church has in the past ignored. They admit that Smith likely consummated some, but ...

BIC, 5th generation Mormon. Did everything in a ward and stake including being on the HC for 14 years and in four bishoprics. My DW hit for the cycle in women's calling, Ward RSP, Ward PP, Ward YWP, and Stake RSP. We walked and although we are both still on the records, have no reason or desire to r...

Re: Why shouldn't I resign?

I have come to the conclusion that if I was summoned for a court of love I would probably send a pizza delivery boy in my place with a stack of pizza and a note saying "Thanks for thinking about me." Having sat in HC meetings, and courts of love for 14 years of church service, having pizza delivere...

Re: Lightning Survey: Before the 2014 Plural Marriage Essay, did you know that Joseph Smith practiced it HIMSELF?

Yes, I had figured it out prior to the essay. However, I spent decades teaching via the D&C and seminary manuals otherwise. When confronted in SS my response was that I was sure this was done by women in the temple AFTER his death. Can't believe how wrong I was, and how many people I need to apologi...

Re: Replacing the New Order Mormon

The main difference that I see is that old NOMs were trying to find a place for themselves within the church where they could serve and somehow be understood and accepted, and that they could focus on what they still found to be "true" about the church. New NOMs have more or less given up on that p...

I can only find references to this story on Mormon and Mormon-ish websites. You are absolutely correct. The link provided quotes an older book which was written by a LDS member, I have the book in my collection and it does not make reference to where the information had been gathered. In studying t...

Re: Next time an apologist throws the Bible under the bus...

When I first discovered all of the issues with the BOM I quickly transferred that thought process to "are there problems like this in the Bible? " Which I think is a natural thought and why apologists go there. I always think of the scene in the West Wing where President Bartlet schools regarding t...

I asked that question to a patriarch (I had two in the family), he basically said there is degrees of glory within the Celestial Kingdom and therefore there would be a place for couples like that. He also said the "worthy" one would be able to visit family in the higher order, but can return. I aske...

This was not my first crack. . . . but as you might tell from reading this, it was responsible for quite a few cracks in various other people. The bishop in our small ward in Idaho was called when he was very young. He immediately caused issues in the ward by calling his mother as the RSP, his fathe...

Re: ‘Trust gap’ hounds the Mormon church, research shows - SLT

I have tried to imagine what the LDS church would have been like if they had been as open as possible at least starting with B. H. Roberts. . . I've often thought about BH Roberts and his discussion with the Q15, and his statement: “In light of this evidence, there can be no doubt as to the possess...
