Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
Interesting as I find the idea of embryology in this, it's something I don't want religions to really learn. I can see them blaming homosexuality entirely on the mother and start policing diets, exercise, environment, thoughts, everything.

Re: Mainstream Christianity.
The Bible is the playbook for destroying the goddess-based religions and, by extension dominating, oppressing and demeaning women. Some nice stories, guidelines and thoughts, but overall, not a fan. Book of Mormon, being Biblical fan fiction is an improvement, but not much better. Jesus of Nazareth...

Re: Genealogy is kind of fun now!
A week or two ago, I launched a little thread about family history and I mentioned how fun and interesting these stories can make holidays. You're ancestress sounds like she was involved with bootleggers. That's my guess, anyway. I hope you write up her story for us. Another thing I like about famil...

Re: Genealogy is kind of fun now!
I agree.
It's actual people and lives and stories. Not just BMD (Birth, Marriage, Death) records and taking names to the temple that have had their ordinances done six times.

Re: Is "not knowing" scary? My new
Atheists, with their view of no afterlife, don't have a tendency to look at world problems and social injustices and say to themselves that things will be better in the next life. All the atheists I've talked to let the idea this life is our only shot propel them to make the world a better place whi...

Re: I just realized that I would be a model member of just about any other church
Possibly the most famous quotation from the Lectures on Faith in 6:7: "A religion that does not require the sacrifice of all things, never has power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation". The bar was set quite high from the beginning. You can't accuse the church of ingr...

Re: Polygamy and gender ratios
Thanks so much GiveItTime and Alas, frankly I haven't been exposed to this kind of stuff, or how its handled. As a man, I have been oblivious to a culture of misogyny, when one clearly exists. Pulling women through the veil and that he could never tell his wife his name, but would get to know hers,...

Re: Polygamy and gender ratios
I know this is following the tangent, but the church had me as a. Hold convinced that my parents divorcing was the worst thing that could happen. I was seriously ready to commit suicide if that was what it took to end the abuse without telling and causing my parents to divorce. I think when the chu...

Re: Polygamy and gender ratios
I read, recently, that abuse victims will stay in a relationship too long trying to make it work out. However, once they've been free for awhile, they don't wish they were back with their spouse hoping to work things out, they regret the years they lost.

Re: Do over sacrament prayers..
We had a guy finally get it right (or close enough) on his sixth try. It was painful to behold, but I suspect there have been even more tries and misses in the quest for the exact Sacrament Prayer wording. Remember, it is not the intent of the prayer that counts, but rather the undeviating word ord...

[Then the woman goes to her bishop expecting actual common sense, best practices help for herself and her children. Heaven forfend! We can't have perpetual female children running around trying to raise her children away from a violent god-in-embryo! No! Best counsel her to go to the temple to remi...

Re: Forgotten Whoppers
Burger King of Orem, Utah once unveiled its LDS Whopper which consisted of a layered combination of burger, funeral potatoes, a square of green Jell-O, ham, cheese, and mayonnaise on a sesame bun. This Whopper is now largely forgotten. I was hoping someone would mention Burger King's whopper. Kudos...

Re: Polygamy and gender ratios
Their husband is the one on the other side of the veil when a woman is getting her own endowment. He is her lord. If the woman is doing proxi work, then the man standing proxy is not standing proxy for THE Lord, but for HER lord. So, when the man calls his wife at resurrection by her "new name" and...

Re: On spiritual abuse
First, there was coming to the conclusion that, given the fact that domestic violence can result in hospitalization and death, it's immoral to let those situations be mishandled because the married party just happened to have "one of those bishops". This has been happening for a very long time. I th...

Re: What about NewNameNoah?
I'm about half way through Mike Norton's Mormon Stories interview (it's one of those looooong ones) and it's fascinating. Has anyone else listened to it? What do you think? Is Mike a hero or a demon? While googling infrormation about Mike I ran across this blog by Jesse Stay, the former church Soci...

The Mormon Church prohibits firearms in their churches: https://www.lds.org/handbook/handbook-2-administering-the-church/selected-church-policies/21.2?lang=eng&_r=1#21.2.4 Should more parishioners carry guns in church? The Mormon church is one of two in Utah that say no to firearms Yeah, the church...

Re: How many come back
IIRC, Margaret Toscano came back, but I don't know if she resigned or was ex-ed. I know that there are people who are ex-ed who were essentially apostate and were ex-ed for other reasons. I know some of them come back, for various reasons. I imagine it's case-by-case. I know one person isn't having ...
