Re: 17 more days, counting down

November 19th my last SIL to marry (in the Temple) gets sealed. So that means 17 more days to attend and pretend. Ha! You and I are on the same schedule! My daughter get's married in the Provo City Temple on Nov. 19th and I am going to not worry about keeping a temple recommend after that. After th...

Re: BYU Honor Code Office Sweeping Changes

Thanks for your informative post Alas. I didn't know about the apparent disincentives for reporting. Abusers need to be punished and have a light shone on their bad behavior.

Re: Take it slowly, then bungy jump

I watched it and thought you did a good job. You have given the church every opportunity. It hasn't been for want of trying on your part. Highest respect to you Beast.

I'm glad you and your wife and your children are all on the same page.

Re: Happy Halloween! Should We Unmask?

Here I am. This is me. There is no where else on Earth I'd rather be Here we are, we've just begun And after all this time my time has come Yeah, here we are, still going strong Right here in the place were we belong It's a new World, it's a new start It's alive, with the beating of Young hearts It'...

Re: Voting in a New Bishop

That's neat. The way our church leadership works, it is no wonder that we are 70 years behind on social issues.

Re: At odds with Religious Community

I really identify with the questions posed by this post, and it has been in the forefront of my mind for a couple years now. I'm convinced that being a part of a supportive tribe is key to most human's happiness. Humans are weak and puny. We need each other. Throughout time, getting marginalized or ...

Re: What is Faith?

And that is how I feel about the church. I am more than happy to have faith, as long as my faith is justified. Exactly! Every time I time I hear preaching about the virtues and necessity of faith I feel like shouting: "It matters WHAT you have faith IN!" . * Should Muslims doubt their doubts and ju...

Re: Calculating our tithing.

A very reasonable way to define "surplus", if you want to do things that way, might be the same way that the federal government defines it... taxable income . Politicians have been fighting over this stuff for hundreds of years to try to come to something that is fair. You deduct all kinds of things...

Re: Calculating our tithing.

It is also useful to compare what people give at other churches. I found a few statistics that say that the average adult gives $17/week or $880 total per year. I saw another statistic from a church building consultant that the average giving per person per year was about $1,000. This is less than 2...

Re: Calculating our tithing.

Great minds think alike! I started a very similar thread titled "How Much Does it Cost the Church for You to Attend $$". Then I was reading through and saw this one. So I deleted mine, and am copying and pasting here: ********************************************************** I try to pay my fair sh...

Re: Tithing

We are to give our tithing to God, not to the church. God is NOT the church. Jesus didn't have a church, didn't attend church, and didn't start a church. Jesus also made it very clear how to give God money, "Inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unt...

Re: BYU Honor Code Office Sweeping Changes

Great changes BYU! Now how about getting rid of the year waiting period for getting sealed after a civil marriage, give women the priesthood, and let gays have sex after marriage. I might just start going again... The one year waiting "punishment" for getting civilly married first is the next easy ...

Re: GoodBoy reintroduction

I can often relate to your approaches to things. I'm with you on wanting to be around those in my LDS community. Although I have never gone "inactive" before, I haven't attended a lot of classes at church in recent years due to a combination of chronic tardiness and having a calling that gives me a...

Re: tithing shake down (settlement)

Go here: https://www.lds.org/donations/#/settings I just went to this website for the first time. It has 10 years worth of donation records.... Aaand, I had a good cry. It shows my donation history dropped like a rock though. I can see exactly when I had my faith crisis. I did a quick calculation o...

Re: My Story - I Need This Community

I don't want to cause trouble for my wife and kids. I don't want my neighbors to know about what I think of the church. Many of them are awesome and I want to continue being their friend. I don't want any them to be afraid that I will influence their kids. I want my kids to know that I don't believ...

Re: BYU Honor Code Office Sweeping Changes

They are behind on these kinds of things because they are hampered by the idea that everything they do and decide is God's will, and because they want to perpetuate that idea (that they don't make mistakes) with others.

BYU Honor Code Office Sweeping Changes

BYU is now offering "amnesty" for sexual assault victims who report their assaults, and they are separating the Honor Code and Title IX offices. http://www.sltrib.com/news/4353191-155/byu-announces-honor-code-amnesty-for I am encouraged by these kinds of changes in the church, and I give them credit...
