Re: New TR question

I can hear the testimonies now: We have been prepared for this day! The focus on observant sabbath worship in the past few years proves that the Lord's servants have been preparing us! We are living a higher law! Gross. And now the weirdos who post pictures of church attendance on their vacation to ...

Re: New TR question

In all seriousness, does anybody really honestly discuss with the bishop and answer all these questions in any way other than a yes or no at the right time? They don’t care if you nuance as long as you say the right things! I think it's a personality type. I never did as a believer and I certainly ...

New TR question

So until I read Anon70's comment on another thread, I had no idea. (Hooray for not watching conference!) Apparently, Sabbath observance is added to TR questions. Beach. But I had to conference earlier with the DH. And the new recommend question about keeping the sabbath holy is probably gonna come u...

Re: If you aren't doing conference, what are you doing?

We didn't listen to any of it. We were going to go to the beach, but one of the kids got sick. Instead, husband tore apart the garage and I am helping kids with halloween costumes. Way better than conference, not quite as good as the beach.

Re: Book: The righteous mind

I've enjoyed reading Haidt's work. Of particular interest to me was "Divinity with or without god." . In short, he writes about how we perceive life on two planes, x & y, but there is also the z axis, the spiritual or divine, awe inspiring, uplifting, whatever word you want to use for it that is com...

Re: Which “group” do you most closely align with?

Had this happened to me way back when, I think I would have joined the religion group because I knew I was supposed to and my identity was entirely wrapped up in it, all while looking longingly at the other groups I could only imagine being a part of. One of the most uncomfortable results of going t...

Re: What did you really learn from the temple ceremony?

My experience mirrors Anon70’s fairly well. I thought I was the one with the problem and kept coming back to figure it out. I was going to ace this temple thing. The odd thing was that I’d always been very good at memorizing things, but I could never, ever get the words of the temple ceremony right....

Re: Article: "Losing my religion at christian camp"

No, I have none of these feelings towards Girls Camp. I went to camp in three different states, some were better than others, but when I was 16 and had a summer job I was relieved not to go anymore. I never felt like I belonged in YW. I always felt like an outsider in Mormonism, a lot like she was a...

Re: Mass disclosure

I really feel for you. It’s hard to stay half-in half-out, but it’s also hard to feel like your hand is forced when these situations happen. I’m sorry, and I hope things are going okay for you guys. I can’t imagine the kind of conversation that happens with a child who is a returning missionary. In ...

Re: Mormon Stories - Donna Showalter

I just finished this one today. I don't listen to mormon podcasts much anymore, but I was feeling down this weekend and just needed to know there were others out there. The last episode really captured some of the feelings I have about moving on. Generally speaking, it reminded me of what it was lik...

Re: Yes Men?

In the church council I am currently serving on, we are told we can disagree all we want internally. Discuss. Dissect. Disagree. But when we leave the room we need to be a unified team that is consistent in our messaging. It sounds good in theory but I don’t agree with a lot of the decisions made a...

Re: To tell in-laws or not?

A lot of interesting points of view and ideas here. I should probably clarify, by “telling” them, what I really meant was just being myself and letting them come to whatever conclusions they want to – I’m not really an email the whole family or have a serious conversation with them kind of person. I...

To tell in-laws or not?

I came clean about my non-belief with my husband about six months ago. He very much wants me to keep it hidden, particularly from his family, because he is worried about how they will treat me. I’m getting to the point I just want to live my own life and I don’t want to hide and pretend any longer. ...

Re: Yes Men?

I think we place WAY too much importance on the need for unity, and that effectively stifles lively discussion on the issues. Perhaps this isn't what you're looking for, but I see the family as a microcosm of the institutional church with this issue. My husband’s family is an example of how the “ye...

Re: Is NOM really "middle way" to any extent anymore?

New Order Mormons are those who no longer believe some (or much) of the dogma or doctrines of the LDS Church, but who want to maintain membership for cultural, social, or even spiritual reasons. New Order Mormons recognize both good and bad in the Church, and have determined that the Church does no...

The only flags or notes on membership records are for outstanding church discipline or abuse cases as far as I'm aware.
I asked a family member who was still a bishop about five years ago, and this is exactly what he said.

Re: Liberal/ Conservative Dance

I think changes in my political beliefs happened just slightly ahead of my changes in religious beliefs and it was that ever so small change that led me to consider how wrong I could be about other things. When I first became disaffected, I swung from far right to far left politically. I stayed ther...

Re: John Larsen on leaving the church but not leaving it alone

I've said it before but Mormonism was never my community even when I was active. My ward wasn't my friend group. I've always been a big time reader and so very few mormons read anything outside of their religion. I like to think about and discuss big ideas but Mormons always fall back on their pat ...

Re: John Larsen on leaving the church but not leaving it alone

I feel like I'm going through another life change that is similar to a faith crisis, but it's a soft, happy, friendly version of it. I'm beginning to finally let go of a lot of things that seemed so important to me and turn my attention to new, bigger things. I know what it's like to have the rug p...
