After a few hours with each of them he was quite willing to literally bet the farm on Josephs veracity.
Until he read the parts in the BoM about a literal hell of fire and brimstone ;) After that he needed a little bit of arm twisting.
Clever but snarky and of course most importantly untrue

Re: Talk about reading between the lines!

The interesting thing about Anthon is that even the church is beginning to doubt his abilities to interpret Egyptian. See: www.lds.org/church/news/speaker-gives-new-insights-on-martin-harris-1828-visit-to-charles-anthon?lang=eng My problem with the account is that there isn't one (so far as I can t...

Re: Talk about reading between the lines!

Thanks for the kind remarks Hagoth. Palerider I had written a lengthy response to your inquiry but it got lost. Suffice to say i am not aware of any correspondence but Young ( the English chap who was trying to decipher the rosette stone) was publishing on the issue ,including discussing Champollion...

Re: Talk about reading between the lines!

Incidentally it is true Harris was out of the church for an extended period but upon his return he not only reaffirmed his testimony as one of the 3 witnesses but so far as I can determined he never, whether in or out of the church ,contradicted the published story of his meeting with Anton. Lets lo...

Re: Talk about reading between the lines!

Can the bolder writing between the lines be attributed to a specific person? In the JSP vol. that contains Manuscript Book #1 they attribute D&C revisions to various scribes of Joseph Smith. I don't have the particular volume of the JSP that you cite. I wonder if its in the county library? The link...

Re: Desperate Attempt at Rationalizing Non-Nephite Archeology

At least stories about the Trojan war were legitimately ancient. But you are assuming the very issue in controversy - the age of the narrative . You choose not to believe it is ancient. That choice says a lot about you but nothing about the issue at hand. The fact that the Mayan codices are a relati...

Re: Desperate Attempt at Rationalizing Non-Nephite Archeology

For whatever it's worth I personally think we all ( believers and non believers alike) would be better off or at least the discourse would be elevated if everyone acknowledged what both Hogarth and I think which is that there is NO archeological evidence in the Western Hemisphere which proves the tr...

Re: Desperate Attempt at Rationalizing Non-Nephite Archeology

Someone tons smarter and more educated than I told me, "No one thought Troy was real until it was found." And with that, discussion is closed. At least stories about the Trojan war were legitimately ancient. But you are assuming the very issue in controversy - the age of the narrative . You choose ...

Re: So Why did Joseph Smith and others remove their garments before Carthage?

The correct answer is because it was too hot. If you know any members from Brazil they usually do not wear garments in their summer for the same reason. Some members in Arizona do the same. Lots of members I personally know in Florida do the same. The Inititory says NOTHING about wearing them "day and...

Re: BYU Prof: People who leave Church deficient in "character"

So the two thirds of the members who have left or at least stopped going to church lack "character". How about the 75- 90 % or so of new converts who are inactive in a year ? Or the 50 % or so of RMs who go inactive ? It appears we are doing a lousy job selecting new converts and our missionary arm ...

Hogarth yes I can agree with your fundamental premise if it is only that we shouldn't "throw the Bible under the bus" in support of the B of M. I also agree with your implication that there is no real verifiable archeological proof of the Book of Mormon in the Western Hemisphere . However the scope ...

Re: Next time an apologist throws the Bible under the bus...

Mad Jax . You need to get out more . A majority of NT scholars agree there was a historical person named Jesus. In fact as a very prominent NT scholar , Bart Erhman at the Univ of NC argues in a whole series of related books that Jesus is one of the best attested figures we have from the ancient nea...

Corsair I agree with your approach. I have been going for 30 years and I have found that a selective approach is best for me. You guys should be aware that as Corsair said there are regional conferences. I just got back from one last week in Colorado City ie Short Creek Az . It was held in Warren Je...

I understand the scepticism and the reluctance to rely on George but does anyone have more reliable contemporaneous sources that would explain his decision. Speculation doesn't count.

. It's possible that he was just plain exhausted after a full day of conference. Anybody would be worn out, and the Q-15 are especially under stress. I didn't see the portion you mentioned (haven't looked at the PH session yet), but if he was wobbly or showed signs of being worn out, it makes sense...

Re: Did Jesus exist?

I have given some time to look at the literacy rate issue more fully. It is true that some scholars suggest 5 percent is likely in the Greco Roman world but others suggest 50percent in Christian congregations is a reasonable estimate. Certainly I personally have seen multiple letters written by the ...

Re: Did Jesus exist?

It's highly likely (based on where Jesus was from) that Jesus, and the vast majority of his disciples were illiterate. It is also telling that all of the stuff written by the earliest believers was in Greek, while Jesus and his disciples spoke Aramaic. All the writing was also done after Jerusalem ...
