Re: Judge Denis Church Motion to Dismiss!

From the article: Vernon has said he would like to depose some high-ranking church officials as part of the lawsuit. Sniff, sniff... What's that I smell? Yup, it's a settlement . No way any of those cowards (officials) will give in to being deposed. Being sued and losing money is one thing that see...

Re: Elder Cook to Take on Church History Questions!

My questions that I can't add because I resigned, but would still love to see answered: "Why were the golden plates necessary if they weren't use in the translation of the majority of the Book of Mormon?" "Did Joseph Smith make a mistake when he practiced polyandry in his efforts to keep God's comma...

Re: "Why don't you want to believe?"

People believe all kinds of crazy stuff basically because they WANT to. Research shows that people make decisions emotionally (what they WANT) and then use their logical minds to find justifications for those decisions that have already been made. Of course we have all seen this behavior with people...

Re: General Conference Death March

Listened to it. God apparently tries very, very hard to make sure that there is no justifiable proof or evidence that his one and only true church and path to earthly, and even eternal happiness and glory is the right one. He wouldn't want anyone to be healed by the power of the priesthood as proof ...

I've just accepted that people believe all sorts of myths, but that nobody knows. That if there was proof for any of these, it wouldn't be much of a debate.

Re: Another casualty of war

What is your wife doing? Mine has never recovered from the stigma of being married to a half assed mormon. She's left out of a lot of friendships because I'm the "ward weirdo"! Unfortunately finding a replacement community that both of us can benefit from at the same time is harder to find. Church ...

Supposed sins of omission is why most, very good members of the church, still hate themselves. I agree. Soul crushing.

Re: Another casualty of war

I would say that my family (including wife and kids) were one of those "great families". My loss of faith caused a huge loss of status for me and my wife in that community. I'm working on creating a new tribe for myself while trying to minimize the damage otherwise.

Re: First drink

Alcohol 101: 1 drink = about the amount of alcohol in about one 12 oz beer, one 5 oz glass of wine, or one 1.5 oz shot of hard (distilled) liquor. A "mixed drink" is usually about one shot of hard liquor mixed with other stuff to make it less nasty. For most people you will hardly feel anything aft...

Re: Looking for a home...

Anyway, for the most part, I really enjoy my association with the church and its members. Can I continue to live and enjoy the "based on a true story" (however loosely) life in the church? I had the exact same questions you did. I trust people to make the best decisions for themselves because you a...

Re: Purpose of religion

I think that organizations are like organisms and follow evolution. Like biology, what drives some organizations to grow and what drives some to die, is just random trial and error. Those that create a following grow, those that don't, die. For every successful religion that grew (like Joseph Smith'...

Re: Church Growth: Boy, were they wrong

My favorite part of general conference has been the statistical report in April. I have been following the charting the church for some time. It was suspiciously expected that the church did not read the report during the meeting. You can go look at it on your own and not have to take up precious b...

Re: Mormonism's Market Value

I really appreciate your educated view of this because it is Greek to most of us. Your estimate of the church's total "rainy day fund" depends on 1) the % of their holdings that they actively manage, and 2) the % of their holdings that is in foreign markets as opposed to domestic. I think you can as...
